Forget the stories about it not being a true live album and having multiple overdubs. Live footage of Lizzy showed that they could pull it off and represent themselves as per the album. The producer, Tony Visconti, just added some hundreds and thousands to a perfectly iced cake
How the West was won- Zeppelin
Unplugged- Alice in Chains (Clapton is good too)
Stripped- Stones.
(The original, double LP from the mid 70s).
'Frampton Comes Alive' probably set the benchmark for live albums - though probably too 'familiar' by now, perhaps.
The live tracks on Santana's 'Moonflower' have a fire that has to be heard; the instrumental 'Europa' is stunning.
Eric Clapton's 'EC Was Here' from the mid-70s proves he could still play, during a period where he was down-playing lead work on studio records.
Dire Straits 'Alchemy' probably represents the band at their peak. They went on to greater success but post-Love Over Gold material was more radio-friendly - and gigs became 'very' big.
