I use Chrome for all my standard interwebz, but BT blocks torrent sites. To get round this I get Pirate Bay by using Opera browser set to Turbo mode which routes the signal via Scandinavia and fools the BT filters. Will this new bill interfere with that too do you reckon?

Beyond outrageous.  As I understand it, a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is typically a monthly subscription service.  Do you need any special equipment, and do you have to change your internet service provider.  If not, how does a VPN work & how will it protect you from Government snooping>

My limited understanding of the bill was that the governed intends to (attempt to) block sites allowing UK citizens viewing anything they disagree with rather than pursuing the viewer.

I'm not at all tech savvy though & hadn't even heard of VPN stuff.

Get used to this folks, it might be the future.

  • Simple solution to the VPN thing - given that they'll likely hammer the VPN providers into sharing data (they'll probably just classify them as "ISPs") - get a Linode or Digital Ocean machine, and get a friendly techie to set it up as a non-caching VPN server. Job jobbed.

Indeed. I couldn't remember the keyboard shortcut for the sarcasm smiley so I just left it in the knowledge that most people around here are intelligent enough to realise .

Sadly there are a lot of people who really believe it though.
Indeed. A Jew living under the Nazis may have done nothing wrong but had everything to fear.

All these things such as Mr Blair wanting us all to carry ID cards, or all cars to be fitted with trackers, and now Theresa May somehow believing that the Welsh Ambulance Service needs access to my browsing history are cases in point. They fundamentally alter the relationship between the population and the state. The government needs to be accountable to the people, and not the other way around.

That is a problem for another day- for quite a while there will be discreet VPN solutions.
You can even pay with bitcoins for some of them for near total anonymity.

It's funny how someone who really knows what they're talking about can describe how to get around this sort of crap in one sentence.

So the question is - do the government and their paid experts actually not have a clue… or do they know full well it will be useless against anyone who really wants to get around it, and hence it's intentionally just to allow surveillance on the majority of the population? I tend to favour the former to be honest.

I think most VPN providers have their servers in jurisdictions that don't have the same intrusive powers i.e. Iceland or Panama. Also quite a number of them operate on a "no logs" policy, which is legal in those jurisdictions. So if there's no data to share they can demand it all they want, it won't help them.

Or are they looking for the blank spaces, which will be where people are avoiding the surveillance?

It would not surprise me if it turned out the government looked at it in reverse - if you're hiding something you must have something to fear. This is modern reconnaissance-by-fire.

Possibly, but even with this legislation, the courts wouldn't let them go too far based purely on a lack of evidence.

See, you're all willing to believe the government is pursuing an Orwellian agenda, monitoring everyone and everything, yet scoff at the possibility that they might be clandestinely collaborating with the monarchy to keep them in the style to which they've become accustomed.

@Emp_Fab vpn is a simple concept where your connection is routed to a privately operated server. From there it connects to the web. The connection from your ISP to the private server is hosted via a secure tunnel. The private server allocates you a discrete IP address. So you want a VPN that does not log user info, is easy to use and you can trust. You pay a subscription to cover the cost of the private servers. It provides anonymity regarding your IP address. Lots to learn, time we all did some research.
