As soon as a pedal is engaged it will buffer the signal anyway. Unless the signal level is too high for the tc pedals and that's causing the issue?
In which case, it's a shame you can't switch the effects loop level to instrument.

I think I want one of these - can anyone tell me whether it's really what I need?
Budget up to around £1,000 (total for head + cab). Willing to buy second hand.

I know of a few V40s in Edinburgh so hoping to get out and see one live!
Listen to Ariel Posen in this video that's the sound sound a V40 right there, these are sounds I get. Check out that Strat to hear that mid range in action:
Currently running it through an oversized (Fat Baby) Zilla 1 x 12 with a Celestion G12-65 speaker. I run a small board on a PedalTrain nano plus. I can carry everything in a one-er. Although I wise my cab was little smaller/lighter.
It's super light and portable and the support from Victory is superb (I mean spot on). I had a problem with a it last week which turned out to be a pre-amp tube. Victory sent me a JJ tube through the post to try as I didn't have any spares.
I'd totally agree it's a pedal platform. My pedal board consists of:
TC mini tuner
EP Booster
Wampler Dual Fusion
Wampler tumnus
Wampler Ego Mini
Deep Blue Delay
I can cover a lot of ground with this small board. And with the compressor after the overdrives I can get some crunchy rhythm tones out of it at any volume.
I have used it at home, rehearsals and live, bloody love it. Love the fact you can alter the dynamics with the different wattage options.
The single ended mode is really useful at home. But since getting the compressor (set subtle with a low blend) I'm using single mode ended less.
Checkout the "that Pedal Show" vids for some really great examples of it. It's just a matter of finding the right overdrive combo.
it's a total blank canvas of an amp that takes pedals really well. The hard part for me was finding the right pedals. But that was my lack of experience picking the right pedals.
Now the dilemma is what cab to get. I played a friend's Zilla 2x12 at a gig last weekend, which sounded great. I think however a 1x12 would do me - as long as it had decent bass response (so presumably oversized is the way to go).
I mailed Paul at Zilla, who recommended a Fat Baby (like the one @AndyJP has). It's almost as large as a 2x12 but presumably a lot lighter, so I'll probably go that way - unless anyone here has other suggestions...

I definitely find the V40 sounds better with the master volume opened up over 5 and a good drive pedal.

I can just about get away with a loudish clean tone on low power mode in the house and use a pedal for drive keeping the pedals volume in check. Using the amps own drive and a J Rockett Archer wound up to to push it even harder into saturation isn't very family friendly at all but that is the best sound for me!
It was this video that sold me on the V40 and Archer combination, the SG Jr tone is right up my street:
I'm not playing chunky rhythm stuff through it, I'm mostly playing single note lines. For me it's plenty and very happy with it.
Be warned though, the Zilla Fat Baby is as heavy as some 2x12s. It's fatter depth wise than a mates 2x12 Egnater cab and the same weight. With the speaker it must be around 20kg.
It does make me wonder though whether I should look at a 2x12 cab instead - particularly as I already have two speakers I'd be happy to load it with.

same weight as a victory 2x12. But it's not as wide as a 2x12 so easier to shift.
I quite like the 1x12 tbh. It's easy to mic also.
