Tommy Allsup - guitarist on the fateful tour with Buddy Holly has passed away. Tommy was the creator of memorable guitar parts for BH-namely Heartbeat and Its So Easy.  http://www.itv.com/news/2017-01-13/tommy-allsup-guitarist-who-avoided-buddy-holly-plane-crash-dies-at-85/

So apart from Chuck Berry, are any of the guitar playing pioneers from the 50's still alive

A fine guitarist indeed. He was still performing and touring into his eighties and made very good use of the fifty eight years that the flip of a coin won him. Another sad loss to our musical heritage. RIP.

Arguably the most influential British guitarist of the era:

    Hank Marvin

EDIT: Only just active in the 50's, I admit....

    Very much so.

Another great rock & roll guitarist/singer from the fifties who is still regularly gigging at 80 years old is Charlie Gracie. Still playing that big three-pickup Guild that looked so cool. Great guitar playing. One of the best.

Best known for his work in the early '60s really, but I think he started out at the tail end of the '50s and I wanted to mention him... Dick Dale.

Me too.  A quick google brought up a Wiki preview claiming he died in 2014.

As Granny Weatherwax says, "I aten't dead yet".

so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

    ....glen campbell....
Sadly he's likely not to be much longer :(.

I also wondered if Ritchie Blackmore could just sneak in, but he didn't start playing professionally until 1960.

Are you sure about that? Some people on the Internet have it that he may have died long ago but hasn't realised it yet :)
One day I'm going to make a guitar out of butter to experience just how well it actually plays.

This gent is still with us at 92. One of the most prolific players of his time. If you're over 40 then you will have hummed long to his guitar parts whilst watching TV....
