Still, the Aussies gave us a bit to be going on with
I saw a vid of Scott Ian (Anthrax) talking about Malcolm Young once; how if he (Scott) turned up to a rehearsal and said he'd come up with an idea that just had an E-D-A progression played in open chords, everybody'd be like 'big f'n deal!". But, in Malcolm's hands, Angus recognised the potential and it became Back in Black.
I explained to my friend how the intro to the tune set it up perfectly with a clean guitar, told her the progression (G-F#-Em-D-C#-B-A) and gave her a vague idea of the rhythm. She just nodded and said "yep, that'll do it."
As for "when am I ready?" You'll never be ready. It works in reverse, you become ready by doing it. - pmbomb

EDIT - and the non-guitarists surely know it, satisfies the OP's question!
