It'll be hell....
I'm actually looking forward to getting back amongst people, so the short commute is a small price to pay.
I'm now part time and we have been told there will be more flexible ( ie home) working in the future. I suspect that will slip and by this time next year we will all be back in the office - hot desking, crammed into meeting rooms. But, yeh, I've been to the office 3 times in the last 12 months, I've done a few other visits but they haven't been for a 9am start. Certainly if I used public transport it might be concerning me a bit by now.
I didn't mind the commute itself - an hour each way but I could sit and read a book, which I haven't really done at all in the last year.
What I don't want is a return to working in the office until 10pm, then getting home by 11pm when it's too late to have anything proper to eat. I also don't want to have to wear a suit, ever again.
A few months ago I'd have said we'll never go back to working in the office five days a week, but listening to more recent discussions it feels like people are starting to swing back that way - they're so sick of lockdowns they want "normal" back, even though the last year has proved there are other ways of working (...for those of us who CAN work from home, of course).
I heard someone on the radio saying they want to see people again. To which the reply was "yes, but I want to see my family and friends, not people at work".
We have been told we may be able to continue a couple of days a week at home. Am quite lucky, as that's a nice mix...
I'm expecting a 3 day in, 2 day out mix, with a proviso that we attend certain meetings in person.
We own our offices, so cannot imagine that they will be left empty...
My firm has improved its profitability in Covid. It’s also been democratising. That’s because people are wasting less time dicking about trying to get trains and can work more when it suits them.
