I certainly have a base day rate for me and my baseline set of kit. And a day rate for a small crew including sound recordist and assistant or 2nd camera operator. And a day rate for post-production and pre-production and so on.

But just about everything I do is bespoke and will have different requirements. Whether you need a drone or you need a helicopter or you need hair and makeup or a hazer and 50ft of dolly track and 5Kw of lights or you need to licence Voodoo Chile.

Any quote will always end up cheaper than going by my standard day rates, which is why the first step is to find out exactly what the client wants. And yep I absolutely have some examples of projects and their associated costs to show a client.

My son is doing his first filming today since the original lockdown started. He's at the Northern Film School. Obviously worried that he's picked an industry dieing on it's arse all of a sudden it seems more optimistic. There will have been huge amounts of filming delayed due to the pandemic so hopefully a bit of a boom time coming up.

There's rumblings of gears starting to turn as Producers and agencies and shows all finally get Zoom fatigue and want stuff that looks good again but I think the industry, same as hospitality, is irrevocably changed by this.

I have little sense of what he’s actually going to do for a living. Although very few of them are interested in the sound side of film and he’s specialising in that, at the moment he’s even doing sound for students a year above him. Hopefully there are jobs in that rather than wanting to walk out of film school and expect to be the next Scorsese.

But, yes, something lovely about film done properly and not just zoom or someone talking straight to camera for YouTube.

There's always work for sound recordists. It's like plumbers or electricians. Once you find a good one that isn't insane (they all go mad listening to things nobody else can hear) you tend to keep them on for every gig and everyone is always asking you if you know a good one.

People that can stand behind a camera and think they can do my job are 10 a penny.

Looks great, really nice work! A bit long for me as others have said but if you're splitting it up then that makes sense.

I suck at creative lighting but I'm getting there slowly! I'm an editor first and foremost but have to do everything now.

PS shameless plug, but if you ever have any opportunities for freelance editor work give me a shout

I used to work in live TV/news so can turn around projects pretty quick especially if it's typical corporate stuff!

Cheers. Editing and grading is how I've been attempting to pay the bills during lockdown as I started off in post production but if some craziness ever happens where I have too much on (HAHAHAHAHA but really) will give you a shout

With my 10 a penny remark I sort of meant there's a bunch of graduates or people who learned from youtube tutorials that have never done a paid day's work doing this job in their lives calling themselves cinematographers, and then wanting to charge 10% of what a rate should be which undermines us twice really.

From now on I might refer to them as Harley Benton DOPs.

Your post work there is great - lots of small but otherwise very good video production outfits are poor at it.

A.friemd of mine has a small video agency (currently 3 guys) and he seems to be very confident about it growing quickly so there's definitely a market out there

Very kind of you. My biggest problem is that, contrary to what it might seem making this thread I am terrible at self promotion and in a word of mouth business I am simply atrocious at getting my name in people's mouths.

Haha I'm hoping that your kind of work will be higher in demand when life is a bit more normal. Personally I'm sick of seeing zoom/home-made or influencer-style content and would love to see more things that have been done properly. We tend to keep everything in-house at my work but if any projects come up where we have budget for your skills I'll keep you in mind!
