    My DC Special

Bridge pickup does the P90 rock thing.  Back down the tone and volume and it gets almost into acoustic territory.  Blend the two pickups with the volumes down a bit and you get that Live At Leeds clean jangle.

    I've had a couple.

First was a LP which sounded really cool but didn't feel right. The new owner loves it.

    This is a keeper;
Martyn Booth Special. BKP MB P90's.

Everything about it works for me save the colour. It's a natural finish. I bought it 2nd hand so naturally could not chose. If I get it refinished it would be a red or blond
Not enough guitars, pedals, and cricket bats.
USA Deluxe Strat - Martyn Booth Special - Epi LP Custom
    FX Plex - Cornell Romany

I do actually buy guitars with P90s too, not just make them ...

Wiz points for anyone that correctly identifies those two

I've had a few over the years.
Gordon Smith, ended up replacing the stocks with Lollars. WezV '52, Gibson CS 56, Collings 290, and now a Gibson SG Classic from 2009.

I love my LP Special Tribute https://flic.kr/p/2kDocXd

The Gibson P90’s sound great, and the guitar is extremely comfortable to play with the moderately chunky neck and satin finish. Very lightweight and resonant.
I’ve put locking bridge studs on it and added treble bypass wotsits to the volume controls for better jangle at lower volumes.

It did need the nut slots cutting deeper when it first arrived, but once that was done the intonation with the stock wraparound bridge has been sweet as a …ahem… nut.

I have a tough time choosing between these two:

If anything, the Yamaha's SD pickups have the edge, but the Gibson wins in terms of weight and form.

Oddly, I've never been into gold stuff, but despite that, I love the way these two look...

coil shape and wind are simialr... most of the difference is in the magnets.  They have a alnico magnet for each pole piece inside the coil, rather than 2 magnets underneath the coil and steel polepieces like a normal P-90.   The version on the archtop is adjustable, so each magnets can be raised or lowered.   Adjustable versions need a deeper pickup route

Gibson's staple pickup was basically a rip-off of the dynasonic  that Les was sticking in his les paul's

They are both fatter and brighter than a normal P-90

Wez, have you seen Alegree's new range of pickups?

They use FeCrCo screws so I imagine they might be a bit like somewhere between a P90 with alnico 5 slugs or the adjustable staple pickups, but without any routing required.

Do Staple Pickups have the midrange hump of P90's?

    ***
I don't have a picture of it right now, but my favourite guitar is a Joe Trohmann Squier which was required 2V2T with Alegree Desert Dew HB sized P90's which are a little unconventional in construction (eg AWG44 10K A5 for the bridge) but the pickups have beautiful clarity for low tunings and lots of fuzz and they also work well across a number of different style.

If the magnets are INSIDE the coil, the poles? won't that make it technically a single coil?

Having one coil makes it a single coil

How many Coils does a P90 have?

I thought both have single coil and the difference is that P90 have a magnet at the bottom.  Single coils have magnets in the poles itself.
