So, my two pence worth, if you're not going to go down the "desktop amp" route. Get something big and proper, dont fuck about with practice amps. Use pedals, get an attenuator, what ever - you WILL love the sound of a bigger cabinet, even at low levels.
truth
just because you do, doesn't mean you should.

Or, these days, the Fender Tonemasters can be knocked back to 1 watt or less, but are gigworthy when up full.
I know a little about attenuators (well, that may be an exaggeration, I kinda think I know what they do), so if that is the route I go down, I'd need to find out more.

shit and slightly less shit when cranked up. for £125 (new) you can do a lot, LOT better

I know they (used to) made others more along the lines of "proper" practise amps......... but that one is the "ubiquitous" pignose everyone thinks of

If you want to sound like a smaller version of your main gigging amp, there are lots of those amps out there. Line6 built many for example. I had an early Line6 combo that did not do the biz for me but I believe that the sounds improved in later models.

I never owned an amp for 6 years after I got my first electric (8 years after I started) practice/learn songs at home "acoustically" then borrow gear

what about a TM ? no valves to worry about, no regular "servicing/maintenance" ?
