Can anyone recommend a non tubescreamer like od?

I'm looking for a new drive pedal, something

* Mass available, I dont want a fancy pants boutique thing

* Non tubescreamer like

Essentially I want something I can put into a clean amp and have it sound like its being driven to the edge of breakup. TS are great, but they only really sound good into amps that are already kind of pushed IMO.

    Crowther Hotcake
    Fulltone OCD
    Subdecay Liquid Sunshine

All different flavours of OD that work differently well into different amps. Hotcake is particularly lovely into EL84s and the OCD is better into Fendery amps I've found. The LS is just plain great into everything

    Budget?
What amp ? Some od's have better reps with UK vs USA style amps for example.
    Any other requirements?

You want a Lovepedal OD11, hey look, there's one for sale (link in my sig) ;-)

Seriously though they are very good, I'm only selling it as I've recently got a Timmy back on my board

    Another Liquid Sunshine vote.

Or a Zoom Power Drive, if you can find one.

Blackstar HT40, the clean channel is quite limited so I just want something where I can run the amp clean and use the pedal for a bit of grit.

I had an HT-20 and its inability to give that just breaking up sound was why I sold it and bought an AC15C1 - which did just that.

OCDs work exceptionally well into blackstar amps as do Liquid Sunshines (which are significantly lower in gain)

  • I use an HT-5 at home and I use an Award-Session JD10 into the clean channel for exactly the purpose you describe. I'm a huge fan of them and have used them for many years for various od/pre-amp/speaker sim tasks. They're not made anymore but there's one for sale in the classifieds. It's a mk2, with is voiced slightly darker than the mk1 I use, I believe.

on the cheap (I'm assuming that's what you mean from your post)

    digitech bad monkey
    mooer blues crab
    joyo sweet baby
    danelectro transparent overdrive

there are probably more than that, that's just off the top of my head and what i've tried.

mxr dist3- more od than dist.
bad monkey - best for boosting a dirty amp.
boss sd2- the crunch setting would, i think, be what you want.

Rat - possibly the You Dirty Rat rather than the more 'vintage' ones, but if not that then the RAT II.

  • Death by audio interstellar overdrive or eh double muff?
Fwiw I have an ht60 which I use clean and get my od from a visual sound jeckyl and hyde. I used to use an old Marshall guvnor which was also very good too

  • Not the double muff. Got one here, it's an average sounding drive and an average fuzz.

I borrowed it thinking it would be awesome. It's not.
