Just took a look at the website @simonRF and this build NEEDS one of them decals.

Question is, what do I call it?

The neck has is a classic large headstock design.

My name is shaun fretwell and I plan to give the guitar to my son Jude when he is old enough to start playing a full size guitar. He's currently 10 months old so it's a good way off yet!

So from that little bit of info, can anyone come up with a good name / brand / nickname t for this build that would look good on the headstock?
    Judemaster/ Judecaster? :)

The 70's Strat logo with the above would look great on the large headstock :)

    What a great apt surname!
To be honest just a simple Fretwell, maybe in the Fender font would be good.

With the name Fretwell you (and later your son) really had to be guitarists, that's a quality name! Tbh I would just call the guitar a Fretwell!

  • My go for Fretwell #1.

    What you think?

If I was named after my guitar playing ability, I would be called Fretcrap.

  • Just read on @simonRF website that the decals cannot be applied to an oiled surface!

That's a shame as the neck will be arriving ready oiled! :(

You could sand the head stock surface to remove the oil, and spray it with satin polyurethane varnish before and after adding the transfer .... and Fretwell is the obvious word to use!

I used oil over the blue stain on the headstock so as to match the colour of the body, obvs also oil over stain.
I then used Halfords acrylic clear over the oil which took really well, and applied the decal, then many many many dust coats of acrylic clear, maybe 18 in the total, I did this as I made a mistake first time round with just 2 dust coats then 2 wet coats, these were a bad idea as the decal shrank and shrivelled all the gold, so it was either too wet or too cold, or probably both.

  • So @Sarge you're saying put some lacquer over the oil, apply decal to cured lacquer then plenty of really light coats of lacquer?

Should I mask off the edges of the headstock and just do the top?

  • SargeSarge Frets: 2433
Yes, at least that's what worked for me.
I mask off the edges with low tack tape.

I forgot to add I key the oil with 0000 wire wool so the clear has something to tack to.

  • I will more than likely have a go at that then as I would love a decal on there.

I will just have to take my time as I don't want to make a mess of the neck!

@shaunyshaun1234 oh gosh what a perfect name. How about a large Fretwell JUDECASTER?

As @Sarge has mentioned workarounds are possible if working with an oiled headstock, it's not totally out of the question just a different process than if lacquered. The key thing is that it's very difficult to successfully put oil over a decal, so a spray on solution like this would be ideal.

@simonRF that would be a perfect logo I think!

Are you allowed to use the 'F'?  Or something similar?

I'll be in touch once the neck arrives and I'm closer to completion. Is it best to contact you through here?

  • So, managed to get a bit of spare time this morning and broke out the tools!

Fitted the bridge, cavity plate and strap pins.

Also spent a bit of time rubbing the wudtone finish with some crumpled as paper. To say that I'm pleased with gloss level is an understatement.

    Let me know your thoughts.

SOrry about having to click the links. I have given up with photobucket. If anyone knows how to turn them into thumbnails or larger images then please help.
