After that I properly investigated and discovered that the dip switch on the bottom of the power supply was set to 100Ma and not 200ma as it should have been. Once I set it correctly, it worked fine in that pub.
EDIT: Actually that was not quite correct. The dd500 was plugged into either socket 5 or 6 but the dip switch had been set away from the normal position ( for line 6 tone core pedals and TC nova pedals apparently). When I switched the dip switch back to normal setting, it worked fine.
