Watch your backs guys! A well known political strategy is to obscure difficult things by getting people to focus on irrelevant issues. Irrelevant issues like Gibraltar. Brexit is the most serious issue anyone in the UK has ever faced. And Scotland might leave the UK. Leaving the EU will cost the UK a lot of money, which will impact on your health services, your road infrastructure maintenance etc. Government knows that it is better to get you concerned about a rock in the Mediterranean than things closer to home. This government tactic and other similar methods, were covered in great detail in the Yes! Prime Minister TV series. It is surprising how much of this you will see when you know what to look for.

Damn right.  It knocks the blitz and the rest of WWII into a cocked hat.

Gibraltar is british territory, that's the end of it.

It is also a dump, full of scumbags and crapness. Imagine all the crapness of british coastal resorts put on a rock, in the heat and fill it with a load of rough necks and crap pubs: you got it.

A truly horrible disappointing place tbh.

No, but this is how the thread panned out.  And I doubt that I would read your opinions if I used Google to find out about the Rock.......

the rock is still important for several reasons. right on the very top of it, is a secure area which tourists are not allowed anywhere near, i've been up there, i was in the airforce and been to gib a few times. it's a 'listening post' , that's about all i'll say. also, if you stand right at the top of the rock, above the dockyard, you see africa, and every ship going in and out of the med. including soviet/russian ones etc. it controls the med, and it's something we still take seriously. when i was there once with 4 jaguars, we were all on pretty much a 'jolly' just showing the spanish that if they wanted to start something etc etc. we'd been there about 5 days when we were alerted to the fact that a russian aircraft carrier and it's support group were heading into the med, we had to re-role our jets and load lots of bombs and shit that were flown out from the uk in transport aircraft, in case they 'tried something', quite what i can't imagine, but we knew they'd be watching us, watching them.

a strange place, but one i can't see us giving up anytime soon.

Agree with the sentiment but not sure Gibraltar is an Empire 2.0 question is it? We have an irrefutable mandate to the place so as long as the resident are happy to stay Britsh, what's the Empire issue?
I don't recall the six and a half million inhabitants of Hong Kong being given that option.

And we did own Hong Kong Island and Kowloon outright, by treaty just as with Gibraltar - it was only the New Territories that were leased.

Actually, I think most of modern Kowloon was part of the NT too. And HK was significantly dependent on the NT.

HK residents should have been given British passports though, but two wrongs don't make a right.

Having visited and worked in Gib with the Navy, it's still an extremely important strategic place.
Those who control Gib, controls the Med.
its British same as Falklands end of story.
So many of these countries want UK to give territory back, yet they all have territory themselves.
    I say sod off!
Like the Argies with Falkland isles, nothing to do with them whatso ever, so tell them all to sod off.

the Falklands are incredibly expensive for the UK, though

    eh?
we give billions a year to the EU, but if we leave it, the NHS and roads will deteriorate?

Ireland did very badly for those things after leaving a union with a wealthier state, but in this case, it's the leaving party that is wealthy
