It's about the height that results from resting the guitar on my right leg when I'm sitting down. That height also suits a thumb at the back of the neck for legato and wide stretches with the left hand.
Pretty much this:

Not sure if this is considered low, but any higher and I'd feel like a complete dork! (Pardon the Americanism)
So somewhere in the middle.
My avatar pic is of me playing live 15 years ago and I still have the guitar the same height now.
For metal, pretty high - about Tom Morello ish. Better for precision for me.
I try to do this as a basic rule and then adjust to feel comfy. Generally the centre of the body sits an inch or two above the belt.
My old drummer used to get really annoyed that i didn't play gunslinger style..
I used to get really annoyed that he was constantly drunk and never played a song the same way twice..
Swings and roundabouts
One of my favourite current players- Simon Neil, wears his pretty high...

Note that it depends whether you want your arm to come in from the end or down from the top.
I am still figuring out the best way to hold my new Peerless Songbird. I find that my hand naturally rests the wrong side of the bridge, so palm muting doesn't work! So a new position will have to be learned.
Also at my age, the height affects how well I can see the strings, the high E at least
As for being cool or feeling a dork, I would say that if the right noises come out of it, that overrides those concerns!
I used the same nylon strap for years. On Gibson SGs.
At either side of the buckle I had 2 thick lines drawn with a permanent marker. Occasionally, I would feel that something was terribly wrong.
It was.
The buckle had moved by 1/8th of an inch.
