  • that superhigh superfly 'rifle-style' was a merseybeat cavern fashion i think. loads of those bands from that time and place seemed to do that. gerry & pacemakers, fourmost, etc.

  • A similar height to Tom Morello. I like the height to be consistent between standing and sitting, so that I always have the same playing position.

It's about the height that results from resting the guitar on my right leg when I'm sitting down. That height also suits a thumb at the back of the neck for legato and wide stretches with the left hand.
    It's not a competition.

    Pretty much this:

Not sure if this is considered low, but any higher and I'd feel like a complete dork! (Pardon the Americanism)

Not quite as weird as Dave Davies playing a Flying V in the '60s

I set the strap so guitar is the same position stood up as when I'm sitting down playing at home.
    So somewhere in the middle.

I’m a rhythm player mostly. I set each guitar up so that my right palm sits in the middle of the bridge with my arm almost straight. I find it very comfy this way and makes it easier for me to play.
My avatar pic is of me playing live 15 years ago and I still have the guitar the same height now.

  • Ive tried it low but found it too hard on the wrist for extended periods but high just looks and feels bizarre, so Im a middler.

  • too high and I scrunch up my shoulder so I lower until they are both even and relaxed and there is no tension across them and along the arms ...

  • For funk, pretty low. More relaxed.

For metal, pretty high - about Tom Morello ish. Better for precision for me.

  • I'm depping in a congolese soukous band right now playing a les paul gunslinger stylee. The other guy has it under his chin. We make an odd combo lol

I try to do this as a basic rule and then adjust to feel comfy. Generally the centre of the body sits an inch or two above the belt.

My old drummer used to get really annoyed that i didn't play gunslinger style..
I used to get really annoyed that he was constantly drunk and never played a song the same way twice..
    Swings and roundabouts :)

  • If the scratches on the back of my tele are any indication, my belt line is just above the centre of the guitar.

One of my favourite current players- Simon Neil, wears his pretty high...

Somewhere in the middle, I guess.
Note that it depends whether you want your arm to come in from the end or down from the top.
I am still figuring out the best way to hold my new Peerless Songbird.  I find that my hand naturally rests the wrong side of the bridge, so palm muting doesn't work!  So a new position will have to be learned.
Also at my age, the height affects how well I can see the strings, the high E at least
As for being cool or feeling a dork, I would say that if the right noises come out of it, that overrides those concerns!

I have different heights for sitting and standing, doesn't particularly bother me although I play better sitting these days.

Take it to logical extremes with one of those cables they use for bungee jumping.

    Waist height.

I used the same nylon strap for years. On Gibson SGs.
At either side of the buckle I had 2 thick lines drawn with a permanent marker. Occasionally, I would feel that something was terribly wrong.
    It was.
The buckle had moved by 1/8th of an inch.
