Whatever shape guitar it is, strings at belt height and neck angled upwards a little.
    It's what I call middle.
Not as low as Slash and not as high as Tom Morello.

My heistercamp strap was the longest length they do though but it's got adjustment both ways with two buckles so it'll work on any of them.

These days it lives on my Strat.

In the middle for me. Pretty close to that picture of Kirk Hammett further up the thread. I'm 6'4" though so this can cause issues with some strap and guitar combinations. 335 style guitars usually need a longer strap to get right.

Each guitar I own has it's own strap set just so. There is no single set height for all of them and over the years I've adjusted each guitar strap to be comfortable. The strat is probably the highest, then the 335 with tele and LP style down nearer the belt buckle (but not quite that far down).
Of course as a yoof I tried over the years to have the guitar slung under the belt buckle, that just made my playing worse and i looked even less cool than normal.

You can see my strap length in my avatar. The important point is that I change the neck angle depending on what I’m playing. Something like “Message in a Bottle” will see it pointing up to my shoulder so that I can get the stretch, and see what I’m doing. Yer average twelve bar can see it almost horizontal.

Strings at waist height, neck parallel to the floor.

Am I the only one who doesn't think that having it stupidly low looks cool? I think it makes you look like a complete plonker.

Higher is fine up to a point - it has to be as high as the chap on the left in the 60s picture above before it looks daft, the one on the right is OK… as was John Lennon.

Has anyone ever tried the "shoulder bag" style eg Freddie King, Albert Collins, I can't watch these guys play it makes me feel awkward somehow, Glen Matlock plays bass that way I don't understand why the thing doesn't slip off or do they all have upturned shoulders?

Got slightly higher as I've got older. Middle of guitar about belt buckle height. I just find more precision like that - think the more 'complex' my playing has become then it just creeps up. But there's no doubt guitar height has a lot to do with genre of music, age and perceived 'cool'. Alt rockers (which is kind of where I fall) seem to get away with higher than metal players, for example. And punk seems to work down round the knees.

    +1

Low enough that the audience wants to hear you play something, and high enough you you can actually play something they want to hear........

I a chin player with guitar and bass, I find it really comfortable and alot easier to play, my wrists just dont understand the lowsliging.

Yeah I have tried it and my wrist has to bend so much down there it hurt..  I do have to wonder if they do it more to try and look cool  than anything else ?

Each to their own I guess  :)

Looking cool is always the most important thing surely
Years ago I'd have disagreed but I actually now would agree. Image and marketing are so huge.

    I wear mine mid-way up.

Kudos to OP for putting a pic of Slash in there!

Why?  Do people on here have an issue with Slash?

Hes one of the reasons I started playing in the first place.. I think hes awesome..  AFD came out at just the right time in my life (my mid teens) just as i was getting in to rock in a big way and blew my mind..  I still think its a classic album...

  • Guitar: a bit longer than a standard strap will go.
Bass: as low as I can possibly manage.
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

  • Telecaster - High. Like, Roy Buchanan high.
Les Paul - Not high enough. Struggle to get it to sit comfortably above my waist.
L-02 - High although not really by choice. I don't have a strap big enough to carry a big body acoustic low so it is high by default - which is fine.

You must have amazing wrist rotation!

I guess I'm similar to Kirk Hammett's height/angle, with my belt buckle between the trem cavity and the belly cut.
