Take a small axe and hack out a 6" length of the ivy all the way around the tree trunk about knee high. Everything above will then die and the ivy won't rejoin over that large a gap. Don't forget to chop through any little strands of Ivy too. It can be quite theraputic, doesn't have to take long and will save the trees. The dead Ivy can hand on the trunk providing habitat for wildlife so no need to remove it.
Go back about every 3 years and repeat on the reduced new growth.
