I have a PRS EG, which covers all the bases if I just need one guitar (which isn't an HSS strat).  However, my first choice would be an HSS strat.  What's his problem with Strats?

That makes me want to throw up in my mouth.

But I get where you're going with the suggestion....
    Maybe this?

He believes that the only guitar allowed is a Les Paul or a Tele through an enormous Marshall stack. No idea why he hates strats so much.

  • Turn up with a strat and have it out with him at rehearsals. Then tell him to get f**ked.

  • I’d get a Tele, a US one if that’s in budget or a MIM if not. If you use distorted sounds more than not then something noiseless would be the way to go, otherwise a decently punchy single in the bridge can do a lot

Charvel DK24 should be good for this gig.

Yeah, I'm not saying it's pretty.... but I kind of like it in principle.

Solid colour instead of the '50s sunburst, HSS, HH or HSH, big headstock like a '70s Tele Deluxe... I'd buy one.

    I do pub gigs and in the last 12 months I've used;

    HSS Strat
    PRS Studio 22 (HSS*)
    PRS Custom semi-hollow (HH)
    Patrick Eggle Berlin pro (HH)
PRS SE Single Cut (H P90)
    Baja Tele (SS)

    * the S's are actually narrow field humbuckers

Apart from the Single Cut and the Tele these were all one-guitar-for-the-whole-set jobs.  It doesn't really matter as far as the audience goes (actually, it doesn't matter at all).

The bass player's 'my band, my rules' thing is fine as long as he's getting all of the gigs, pulling in the punters, taking all the financial risks etc.  If he was a big named star and was offering you the chance to do a world tour etc you'd play whatever guitar he asked.  If he's just one of the band but likes to play the big I-am then I'd be looking elsewhere.

Yeah, I get it as far as the audience is concerned, but I like to do my best at sounding half convincing, at least for my own satisfaction.

I'm joining an established band that's been playing in various guises for 20 years, so i'm very much "the hired help", and i'll take what I can from it and bugger off as soon as I can.

Does he also tell you what to wear?

  • Definitely a Variax (preferably a James Tyler one). Seriously usable Strat, Tele, LP, SG, 335, acoustic sounds (+sitars, banjos and other oddities), all from one guitar.

Is it just the Fender strat he has an issue with? or is all "strat shaped" guitars? Does that include super strats?

I'm going to guess it's SSS strats - he doesn't seem to understand that it's down to the player.... I think he's just had the "wrong" guitarist in the band for a while.

Hmmmmm. Bass player that wants to sing, be in complete control of the band and has a pathological hatred for Strats.

    It’s Roger Waters isn’t it??

Out of sheer bloody-mindedness I'd be looking for a San Dimas or SoCal style 1, which are basically hot-rodded Strats. When he complained, I'd point at the headstock and say "But it's not a Strat"
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

I'm probably the only member of this forum mentioned by name in Whiskey in the Jar ;)

Yeah, that was my thoughts. I can see where he is coming from - it's a 3 piece band and he wants the guitar to sound as big as possible.

    I don't like 24 fret guitars though....

I think I'd go PRS 22 custom - Or a tele in fact I'd just use my tele ;)

Quite considerably out of my budget, the first one....

Tele-wise, what would you suggest I look at?
