Buyer wants to pay ‘by card’??

He wants to bring his own card reader and then use that to pay by card

I have zero experience with card readers - is this a good idea? ..how do I ensure I don’t get fleeced?

He's confused.... he should do a faster payment via online banking at your house... usually 2-10 mins to clear.

Or second best, watch him do Paypal "friends and family".

He probably means do an online bank transfer to you, using a card reader which some organisations, like Nationwide Building Society for example, require you to use to set up a new payee. The payment should be almost instant and you don’t let him leave with the goods till you’ve seen that the money is in your account.

Rather than a card payment machine like in a shop, could he just mean a little calculator-like card reader, so he can set you up as a payee?  Although he could do that in advance...

If he can manage to get a remote card reader to work he can manage to figure out how to extract the cash from a cash machine.

It's prob worth him sending you a pound before he comes and then transferring the balance.

If there is an issue with online banking it can sometimes take 30 mins to several hours.
Time for a few coffees and a play lol.

I did this to pay for a guitar with a bank transfer. 

I had to set up a new payee with my online banking app which I required the use of a card reader. I did this all over 4G in a car park, took about five minutes in total including the seller seeing the funds in his account.

I'd assume this is what you buyer means but always worth a message before hand to confirm.

Cheers all - I’d be 100% fine with a transfer, but the card reader makes me nervous 

Buyer has been flakey to date, so I think it’s a step too far

Hmmm... in my limited experience, whenever I've felt unsure about how a buyer is behaving... it's often resulted in hassle.
Maybe good to trust your instincts on this one???

To make an online payment from my bank I have to put my debit card into a little card reader and go through a dance of entering numbers and stuff to confirm the transaction.

I'm not sure I agree. It sounds like he's going to do a bank transfer and he's going to need his card reader to do it. Nothing less complicated than money going straight into your bank.
