Albums you still love...

What's Hot

...years later.  Just as much as you did when you first heard them (this is the key).

We all buy albums that we like at the time, maybe for a few weeks or months. But then years later don't find them as appealing....don't we?

Some albums just speak to you at that certain time in your life.  We may look back on them nostalgically, sure, but do not love them as once we did.

For me personally, the following albums fall in to the 'love it just as much' category...

The Wondermints - Bali
Gin Blossoms - New Miserable Experience
Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain
Pixies - Doolittle
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush

I think we need to stick to albums that have had a good time to age.  Let's say at least 10 years.

I could have easily put Rubber Soul on my list, also Making Movies by Dire Straits.  But I tried to restrict my list to 5 (for some reason).

Kick by INXS comes to mind. Not the greatest album ever and I barely listen to it now, but it was the first album I seriously got into, they were 'my' band, and whenever I hear a track off it it makes me feel happy and I sing along. And the grooves...my god barely any other pop-rock band comes close to swinging like them.

Mine would be a massive list, but good to see The Gin Blossoms in the OP's list. I'd have that and Counting Crows "August..." In mine for sure. Always reminds me of the days when I meet a wonderful girl who's now my wife.

    I'll try a few more:

    Def Leppard - Hysteria
    Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
Bruce Springsteen - Pretty much everything up to and including Tunnel of Love
    Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream
    Dire Straits - Alchemy
    Iron Maiden - Seventh Son
    Led Zep 2
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
Pink Floyd - Dark Side & Wish You Were Here
    Ryan Adams - Gold
    Heather Nova - Siren
    Neil Young - Ragged Glory

    Plus loads more.

It was actually that album by the Gin Blossoms that germinated the idea for this.  And that album by Counting Crows would fall under the like, but not as much as I once did category for me.  Probably the same for Recovering the Satellites as well.

Quo - Live (the original 70's version)

    Sabbath - Vol 4

    Clash - London Calling

Cowboy Junkies - Studio (ok, it's a comp, but that's not grounds for exclusion)

Martin Stephenson - Beyond the Leap

Joan Armatrading - Show Some Emotion (Willow is still a hairs on the back of the neck track)

    Bread - the Sound of

Dr Feelgood - Be Seeing You

    holly Cole - Temptation

Ian Dury - Mr Love Pants (IMHO, his best album)

Those have all stood the test of time.

And I guess a load, load more.

Yeah, I realize that there are a lot of albums we all still love. I could have put quite a few more on my list.

It's not just me is it?  We all have albums that we loved at the time, but maybe not as much now?

Couldn't agree more. An absolutely beautiful song.

And the 'hairs on the back of your neck' test is probably the measure of truly great music.

The stuff that had some kind of emotional 'truth' about it never fails. 'In My Life' off Rubber Soul, 'Let's Go Out Tonight' off Hats and 'Hurt in Your Heart' off Grace & Danger off my list certainly 'hit the spot' for me.

You know, I thought I was the only one that loved New Miserable Experience.  Some of the lyrics seem so honest (Lost Horizons particularly).

I am glad there are people that love it just as much.

    Totally.

Lots of stuff is great at the time, in the moment, with those friends (etc).  As with any fashion, there's trendy, and there's classic.  There were loads of punk albums that I thought were game-changing, life-changing, world-changing, at the time, as a spotty teenager.  With the exception of Bollocks and Damnedx3, they all seem wonderfully naive now.  I might still like them (Pure Mania for one), but I don't think they're as great as I did 40-odd years ago.

There's stuff that I think is wonderful today, but have no idea whether I still will in 10 years time.

Fastball!  I never bought that album, but 'The Way' always stands out for me from the 90s.  Loved that song.

More Counting Crows in here than I'd have expected, The Fretboard haz taste ;) may have to put on 'August...' followed by Springsteen's 'Born To Run'...for me:

Counting Crows: August And Everything After
Bruce Springsteen: Born To Run (frankly one of the finest albums ever committed to tape)
    Tom Waits: Heartattack And Vine
The Gaslight Anthem: Sink Or Swim
    Machine Head: Burn My Eyes

First five that came to mind, there's probably a dozen more.

'Born to Run' was also close to my list.  ( I really should have listed everything not just my top 5).

I always say to people, 'Thunder Road' is my favourite all time song.  Really love 'Meeting Across The River' & 'Jungleland' as well.

I am also surprised by the love for The Counting Crows as well.
