Best examples of high gain single coil sounds?

What's Hot

I'm looking for ideas for recording. I'm happy with my humbucker sounds and my clean tones.
But I'm looking for high gain single coil tones.

Obviously there is

Yngwie
Joe Stump
Paul Gilbert for some (although his injector pickups are so high output they are not really single coil tones)

But for the life of me I cannot think of any others at the moment - particularly for rhythm work.

Any ideas?

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

That’s because single coils generally don’t sound good with high gain, even if you don’t mind the hum.

You need something with more midrange and less treble or it just sounds scratchy and/or buzzy.

Biffy Clyro. Somehow he makes a strat into a metal zone sound monstrous!

I am aware of the issues.

But I refuse to believe that there aren't good recorded examples somewhere.

Bill Steer uses a Les Paul Jr a lot if we're allowing P90s (the best kind of single coil, fact).

I'll have a listen, but alas I don't have a guitar with P90s in it.

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce to you, the Fender Broadcaster.

Some of Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop is a late Fifties Telecaster.

IIRC most of the Tom Morello Drop D songs are his tele into a JCM800

Single coils can sound incredible for highwe gain IMO, especially at the point you still get some of the twang in the tone, but they’re not without drawbacks for noise.

Lower Than Atlantis have some pretty awesome high gain single coil sounds (a huge bass tone doesn’t hurt either)

I’ve been listening to a bunch of Bilmuri albums lately and he’s got some cool higher gain but still twangy rhythms going on

Tides of Man sounds quite Fender-y to me (the singer later went on to join Dance Gavin Dance)

For something closer to metal I’ve used my Telecaster with BKP flat 50s on one side of high gain rhythms for both songs my band has released so far, if that’s any use?

I have this clip already online of some isolated high gain sounds, a rhythm and some double tracked leads

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/z22j7lrbfpkzsc9/Telecaster%20BKP%20Flat%2050%20Clip.mp3?dl=0

Don’t have the isolated guitars for this bounced out but the right rhythm guitar on this song is the Telecaster through a blend of Neural DSP NTS and Nameless, it’s pretty high gain

The funny thing is that I've done some minor work on a couple of Simon's guitars when they were in the shop - both Strats - but I'm not a fan of the band at all, so I really had no idea what he used them for .

Texas Special pups I believe. And sometimes the pickup selector taped, so it doesn't deviate from the bridge pickup!
