So recently took a liking to paul weller's 90s stuff like sunflower and changing man. i know he used a marshall jmp lead and bass 50 combo for that....settings im not sure of but this is a nmv amp, it didnt sound too distorted...

Anyway, i have a jcm 800 4010 50w combo, vox ac15cx1 (master volume with alnico blue) and orange ad15 master volume.....which do you think would his this tone most accurately? Also have a jcm 900 dual reverb combo.

When I saw him at the "CornExchange" he was using a wall of Marshall & Blackstar amps, so loud that I was ringing for two days

That would have been his cohort, Steve Craddock with the Blackstar amps... probably Artisan 30s

I quite like his tone on his first solo album, it sounds Voxy on some tracks. Anyone know what that was?

  • I guess im wondering if thd 4010 can get close to the lead and bass sounds for this....maybe the tone structures are too different and the 800 is too aggressive

The Lead & Bass combo is pretty thick-sounding, I don't think the 4010 or the JCM900 will do it.

Out of your choices I would try the Orange first actually - it's not the same, but the tone is thicker and might get you closer.

But as ever, go with what your ears tell you - and don't be afraid of radical EQ settings.

I did have the pleasure of giving Craddock’s Artisan rig a blast with my SG. It really does move a *lot* of air... and sounds incredible!

My casino is a little earlier than his.. but it has that nice woody warmth with bite combo of the P90s.  A JMP or a half cranked JCM800 or an Orange will all get in ballpark.

clipping the bright cap or putting it on a switch or altering its value can warm up the JCM800. Or just dial down treble and presence.

    What guitar you playing?

  • Im not sure but doesnt craddock use his artisans as a pedal platform?

  • I love those Weller albums - Wild Wood and Stanley Road. Brilliant songs and guitar playing and yes, the tones are amazing.

My impression was that he just plugged either an SG or a Casino straight into that Marshall JMP combo and cranked the sh#t out of it.

JCM 800 with an EQ pedal boosting around 800K and reducing the bass and treble might do it.

I also love Craddock’s playing in OCS - the riverboat song is a little masterpiece.

    Guitarists with character.

Just to second the bit about a graphic EQ pedal. You can do so much to change the tonal flavour of an amp and speaker(s) for not much money or trouble. Done the 800K thing with a Marshall myself.
This is the truth from hillbilly guitars!

My brother lives in the same village as Damon Minchella, who played bass with Paul Weller for 12 years, so I asked him if he could find out.

1960s Marshall Bluesbreaker, which makes sense.

I’d go along with that. Cranked, by the sound of it and a pretty casual indifference to tuning...
