This thread has been dead for a while. Although i play in an oasis cover band i really like the Stanley park and Heavy Soul Paul Weller guitar sound and am going to try and create something similar this weekend at a gig. One song i like off Heavy Soul is "Brushed". If you Youtube him playing this song live one that appears is a more recent one (cos he has the longer white hair) and seems in a studio room with the whole band in there. This would lead me to think the volume wasnt overly high for this but his lead and bass 50 was still fairly crunchy. This being a non-master volume amp i thought this would need to be really loud to get this sound.
    This one?

Isn’t it well documented that he uses a BD-2? Maybe that’s what’s providing the drive. Good luck in the search, sounds fun. I’ve been after that elusive Setting Sons/All Mod cons/Sound Affects sound all these years personally.

From 90s when he was solo he has been using a Marshall Lead and Bass 50 combo. I believe he did use the Vox and Peaveys whilst in the Jam.

FWIW you being in an Oasis band Bonehead used the same model Marshall Lead and Bass 50 combo in the early days.

    Peavey Backstage 30.

Thats right, I think weve done this before. I used to gig with a pair of Vox Escorts (30w 12"?) that Nailed the Jam tones

If you can tolerate the idea of a slight mod to the JCM800, you could put the gain control bright cap on a push-pull switch, so that lower gain settings aren’t ‘artificially’ brightened. With my SC20 I found that opened up a lot of warmer/smoother lower gain sounds.

First thing I bought after my Rick 330 was that Peavey Backstage 30. Imagine my surprise when it sounded nowt like ‘that’ tone.

I get a better sound out of my US Tele into my positive Grid Spark. It’s witchcraft I tell thee!

    Peavey Backstage 30.
Side note. My mom and dad first met each other at a Jam gig at the old Bingley Hall. Youtube footage of that gig (it's out there somewhere) reliably informs me that Weller had a few of the ye olde Backstage 30s behind him.

They celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary today.

Do you all feel old yet?

Just so people are aware. I have no idea what any of these words mean.

I do… i was at that gig. Well, Bingley Hall Stafford or Birmingham ? Either way, I was there… still the greatest gigis Ive ever seen; an almost spiritual experience.

The Peavey thing, by the way, was used (it appears) at certain times when he wanted feedback. You would see him live lean into the Peavy for said feedback… usually, with Private Hell, Eton Rifles etc.

Ok as i said i have gig tonight and although i play in an oasis band im going for a cleaner 90s weller type tone. My lead and bass 50 gave up on me yesterday so the amps i have taken with me are jcm 800 50w 4010 combo, jcm 900 50w combo dual reverb and marshall st20c (studio 20/5w version of jtm45). I will have limited time during soundcheck to try out a few but as one amp will be left in the car what would you say would be best and if you really want to go further suggest gain settings. I also have an attenuator with me and we are not miced up. I was thinking possibly the dual reverb on clean channel on 25w mode so i can get the master higher, jcm 800 with preamp lower but the bright cap may make this too thin or the st20c may be perfect but as it doesnt have a master volume may either be too loud or not loud enough....it does have 5w option but that wont compete with the drummer. Any thoughts appreciated

At the gig i just ended up using the jcm 900 50w combo on 25w (triode) mode so wasnt a Weller sound at all...more an early oasis sound. Even though it was 25w mode i had the master up around 7/10 so quite loud.

But joy of joys one of those rare Marshall 1987X-pw combos came up for sale yesterday and i snapped it up straight away. These are the ones they only made 50 of around 2008 maybe, the white lead and bass combos with the RAF type blue and red circle. I havent got it yet i have a really long drive to pick it up in couple of weeks.

Yup, he uses two A30s with two 2x12 cabs. The amps he has now were built by myself and a colleague with Peter Blake inspired artwork on the grilles.

Picture of them with my SG when they came in for a service. Great sounding amps. Blackstar just put a more recent picture out on Social Media of them as they are now (a little more relic'd due to them being gigged *hard* for a a fair few years now).

I've never heard anyone get Paul Weller's tones he got with The Jam, or ever got close myself, from his early Ric 330 into AC30 to the Ric with the Peavey Backstage to Ric through the Marshalls.

Same with Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols.

Not very clean! He also uses both channels from the settings taped to the top of them and there would be a significant amount of grit to the sound with the humbuckers he mainly uses. Bear in mind that Steve rides the controls of his guitars *constantly* live, so a lot of the dynamics come from that. He is a superb player.

That's cos, in Steve Jones case, no one these days would allow you to turn a silver panel twin up that loud anymore.

My head said brake, but my heart cried never.

Steve Jones Twin had a master volume, but, I don't doubt he turned it up loud.

It also had the optional - ludicrously heavy and efficient - Gauss speakers. And he allegedly stole it from a Bowie gig… you would think a big name act would have security, but it would probably be unwise to argue with someone who can lift one, let alone walk away with it.
