Having owned one, he must've had it unbelievably cranked to get that tone. A mate of mine had a similar one and was using it at a rehearsal studio in Monkey Hanger land, they cranked it for shits and giggles. Someone from an office a street over came to the studio and asked them to turn it down astonished

My head said brake, but my heart cried never.

Steve Jones Twin had a master volume, but, I don't doubt he turned it up loud.
It also had the optional - ludicrously heavy and efficient - Gauss speakers. And he allegedly stole it from a Bowie gig… you would think a big name act would have security, but it would probably be unwise to argue with someone who can lift one, let alone walk away with it.
I thought it was 'borrowed' from Bob Marley...

This says Bowie, McCartney or Marley - https://www.gearnews.com/get-that-sex-pistols-tone-steve-jones-guitar-rig/

Somewhere else on the net says Ron Wood... who knows. The only thing that strikes me as hard to believe is that anyone could actually nick one! They are astonishingly heavy with those speakers, and still just the single top handle.

First thing I bought after my Rick 330 was that Peavey Backstage 30. Imagine my surprise when it sounded nowt like ‘that’ tone.

I get a better sound out of my US Tele into my positive Grid Spark. It’s witchcraft I tell thee!
I've never heard anyone get Paul Weller's tones he got with The Jam, or ever got close myself, from his early Ric 330 into AC30 to the Ric with the Peavey Backstage to Ric through the Marshalls.

Same with Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols.
Yeah, we’ve discussed this before. I’m convinced it’s a solid state sound. I don’t buy into the Vic Coppersmith Heaven thing about putting metal corrugated sheets over amps etc. I can hear it mostly in his sustain at the end of songs, sounds like an electric razor almost. Think the dying seconds of Billy Hunt. If you could get that, you’d no doubt be there or there abouts.

All that speed must've done him a favour. I doubt I'd be quick enough to nick McCartney's pint, leave alone a CBS era Twin lol

Whether he nicked it and who from, I've read variations. That said, he could have got it out the Argos catalogue. It's still a killer tone he had.

In my early days the Jam were my favourite band, first band I saw live, at Portsmouth Guildhall supported by the Vapours.
At the time his sound on the first two albums was my ultimate guitar sound and as it happened my Epiphone was stolen so I took out a loan to buy another guitar.
I saw an ad in either Sounds or NME…can’t remember which, but it was a blonde 1965 330. I called and asked whereabouts they were, they were miles away in Liverpool, I said no worries I’m down in Portsmouth…too far away. Well our parents live in Gosport(15 minutes away from Portsmouth) and I’m down there the weekend. They brought the 330 down and left it with their parents, I went to Gosport, gave them the £500 and took it home.
The next week with the band, plugged it into my Marshall 2203, hit a couple of chords and for a moment I was Paul Weller…jeez, it was THE sound, Friggin awesome!
for me, personally it doesn’t get any better than this…

Jmp or jcm 2203? Although i like his jam sound personally i just love his 90s to now sound with the lead and bass 50w combo. Sounds cleaner and thicker than a 2203 i find.

I see he uses either a sg or a 60s epiphone casino with p90s. I have an r8 with a seth lover in the bridge, a gibson 335 and a les paul with p90s (50s tribute).

Re the bluesbreaker thing, either he thinks it's a bluesbreaker because he's not strange like us. Or he is strange like us, knows what it is and doesn't want us copying it.

I went to the studio where he was rehearsing in north London and he was using the 18watt Marshall combos.

Maybe he does use different amps for practice etc but all his gigs he has a lead and bass 50w combo behind him. Sometimes has a vox
