    That is an IS mount, with an adapter to post mount.
    You'll need to measure the disc accurately to check, but that may be a 165mm disc. IIRC Hayes used 145/165/185/205, whereas most others used 140/160/180/200.

    Either of those brakes should be a direct swap, although you may want to look at wear on the discs. It's only if need to change disc size, that you'll need to change adapters (at least I think that'll be the case, as I'm pretty sure Hayes done the whole 5mm difference via the caliper mounts, not the caliper. Worst case scenario, a couple 6mm washers will pack the calipers up enough to run on the existing discs)

  • Thanks for that @m_c ;

    I'm pretty sure the discs will be 165, I did a rough measurement with the wheels in the bike and it was about 160 just off the centre, 145 would be way too small and 185 too big.

    As it looks like i'll be able to fit either of those brakes, i'll ask for a set for Christmas.

  • I took the wheel out @m_c and they definitely seem to be 160mm discs. I've sourced some IS to post mount adapters for 160mm so should be good to go with the XT brakes when they arrive. Do you know if they will work out of the box or should I get a mechanic to give them a once over when i've fitted them?

    If they're 160 discs, then you shouldn't need to change any adapters.
    As long as the brakes work, and you've tightened everything properly, then you should be good to go.

    Ah ok, lucky I asked as I hadn't quite ordered the adapters yet. Thanks for the advice!

    They should work straight out of the box. Just make sure that they’re properly aligned. To to this fit them loosely to the mount, put the brake on and then tighten the bolts. That should ensure that the pads are parallel to the disc.

    And don’t be tempted to squeeze the levers without a disc or spacer between the pads!

    Since moving from London to Warwickshire a year ago I’ve been trundling the trails on my old City Hybrid bike, not very useful in the winter!

    This was looking at me from my local bike shop so took a punt today - straight out to get some mud on it!

    Feels like a lot of bike for the fairly modest outlay.

    It’s a Marlin 7 - no idea on specs to be honest but I think Marlin probably the slightly lesser model to X Calibre, I feel like how a beginner guitarist probably feels going into GuitarGuitar and buying their first MiM Fender. Looks fine I’ll take it!

    To be fair two things I wanted were disc brakes and single chain ring and this had them at a good price. Enjoyed the ride today through some big old mud.

  • Ah okay, very similar (same?!) frames then - I think most of the difference is in the wheel sizes! If it's anything like my one though it's a great bike indeed :)
