Who was the coolest looking musician for you as a teen?

What's Hot
axisusaxisus Frets: 28359
There were two for me:

I discovered Queen when We are the Champions hit the singles chart. I could not believe his mad look with the two tone leotard, and massive cut out for his hairy chest! I loved Freddie in that period of time. I went back to their early days and his long hair was a bit weird, and I never liked the later look with short hair and tache. But that 70s period when his hair was medium length - so cool!

This is not that leotard (couldn't find a decent pic) but it's another mad one!

The other one for me was late 70s Neil Peart. I discovered Rush and they were one of my most important bands. Neil just looked soooo cool with the long hair and long tache.

Roy Wood and as number 2 Marc Bolan
although I should warn you that I also thought Dave Hill's guitar was super cool ( it was ,in fact , SUPERYOB ) and I also wanted a pair of Bay City Rollers trousers .
Whilst some of those things embarrass me now I am still a huge Roy Wood fan from the Move ,Wizard and solo stuff.
A great and very underrated musician and songwriter .
I was about 11 or 12 years old watching him on TOTP in his wildest Wizard make up and hair/beard enjoying Ball Park Incident  ( still a great tune ) when my grandmother came in ......screamed and said " Oh my God,it's a Wildman from Borneo "
That made him even cooler to me .
Strangely enough as an adult I have been to Borneo and Sarawak and never seen anybody who looked in the slightest like Roy Wood !

I also thought Lol Creme of 10cc looked cool because he had a white stratocaster when they did "Donna "
Ironically ,a white strat would be my very last choice of guitar as an adult.

I always wanted to be Meddle era Dave Gilmour. He looked cool and was really good looking at that time. We look kind of similar nowadays, both bald as badgers.

For real Marc Bolan (met him!); Alice Cooper ; David Bowie/Mick Ronson & even Elvis Presley (comeback tour era) all the way up to date.
Stars keep coming, some remain  ;)

  • Kurt Cobain, by a long way. He looked so utterly cool, rebellious, wore t-shirts from obscure bands, his hair colour and length changed weekly, he taught us early 90's teens the scruffy grunge look,  though no-one looked anywhere near as cool as he did. This pretty much remains my dress style 30 years on!

I love the Charles Peterson photos of the Seattle bands of that time:

Freddie Mercury when I was a kid/early teens, then James Hetfield (Lightning/Puppets era when he had the long hair but was clean shaven) in my later teens.
I wanted to be both of them. I am still neither.

PS, why is appreciation of cool musicians deprecated by age?
