  • David Lee Roth c 1984 when I would have been 14

  • John Williams - the classical guitarist. I played classical until my teens and he was my idol.
After him I'd say Jimi and The Edge from the first couple of albums.
    I'm 50.
Not enough guitars, pedals, and cricket bats.
USA Deluxe Strat - Martyn Booth Special - Epi LP Custom
    FX Plex - Cornell Romany

    Johnny Greenwood.
    Russell Lissack.
I love Bloc Party’s first two albums, my friend used to call him the ‘Worm’. I think because of his haircut?

Have you seen them now? They’re no longer wirey, indie kids but beefed up muscle heads!

Maybe Steve Vai, but in hindsight I was very wrong.

  • Steve Clark. He had that effortless thing going on, where he just looked like he wasn't even trying. It's literally just occurred to me that he's probably the reason why I used to wear my guitar so low...
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

I'm probably the only member of this forum mentioned by name in Whiskey in the Jar ;)

Yeah, they’re shite these days. Loved the first two albums, and there were moments on Intimacy too, but beyond that I completely lost interest. Later works almost undoing all the brilliance of their debut. (Which is by a distance their best, and probably in my top 3 of all time)

At age 14 I was mistaken for David Cassidy at Athens airport .......I suddenly had loads of Greek girls screaming at me and some Greek Policeman forming a cordon. Because of language issues it took about 10 minutes for my dad to explain that we were not American and I wasn't David . Actually it took 1 minute to do that but about 9 minutes to figure out what the fuss was about.........apparently he was due there later that day and I had the same hairstyle.
Felt good while it lasted .

I was also a big fan of the Beastie Boys (at their coolest in Check Your Head era imo).

Also all of Appetite era GnR -

And when I was 14 I basically wanted to be Max Cavalera -

  • From when I was a teen ?

Definitely Mick Jones and Joe Strummer, and Mac and Will from The Bunnymen.

I was also fascinated by Mark E Smith - actually probably more scared than fascinated.

Schenker with the hair extensions, although in retrospect they were a bit silly (but I still think he looked cool)... and that Flying V is ridiculously cool.

This may be a weird one, but this is one of the coolest pictures ever, IMO.

Skip forward a decade and I think the coolest looking rock guitarist ever actually started out as a sort of goth/alternative rocker...

    John Taylor

All of Duran are cool I think! John is one of the best bass players of all time I think, very overlooked.

For me it was Hetfield, always cool, and on the latest live stuff he looks so fit and well, good stuff! Honourable mention for GnR too.

Scott Gorham followed by Phil Lynott
I saw Thin Lizzy when I was 15 and they both seemed like proper rock gods to me ( I have no memory of Gary Moore although he was there). I saw Phil a few years later in Grand Slam and thought he was still cool although having seen photos from that gig he was bloated and sickly looking by then.
I had some things from Sounds on my bedroom wall, the only one I remember was of Motörhead. Phil, I think, wearing a Whale Oil Beef Hooked t-shirt which I didn’t understand at the time at all.
