I buy food new, almost all guitar stuff second hand... because minimum 20-30% savings is real & I'm not entirely insane yet.

In 20 years of playing I have bought 25 new guitars (includes 3 partsacasters built from new parts) and bought 28 used guitars.

As I only started to play guitar when I was 40 I've had a lot of catching up to do!

  • Used. Always.

  • All of the guitars I own were purchased new, and all of the guitars I plan to buy will be new. But, as I'm very old, some of my guitars are very old.

    It's not a competition.

  • All new for me, even though I know it makes little sense as I often lose money when I sell them on, six months later....but I do like the safety net of the 14 day return period.

The 4 current guitars were new.

Generally haven’t bought used that often. There’s usually a nagging doubt that it’s being sold as it’s a dud or something else dubious is going on.

That said, the only guitar I regret selling was a used gold top McCarty with p90s.

I bought a new player tele only because second hand prices were pretty much the same as new, and I wanted a mint one. S/H Squier P-Bass and a very second hand RG550 about 20 years ago. Every other instrument I've owned has been second hand. Pianos and Cornets mainly.

Oh apart from a new Glarry acoustic, partly out of curiosity!

I feel really guilty but I only ever buy second hand guitars, but I did buy a new Blackstar HT5 combo when they 1st came out…but it went back due to a duff valve. I’ve also bought new Thorpyfx pedals.....

Yeah same, I always feel like that too regarding it being a dud or having weird issues etc.

When young/poor 2nd hand. As got older/wealthier mainly new. So I suppose that's my preference now. But would definitely buy 2nd hand if found something I liked in a shop.

I have mainly bought OM/dreadnought acoustics over the years with an occasional archtop. 2nd hand instruments are played in and can be better value. The fact that someone else has owned it doesn't bother me one bit.

2 biggest guitar regrets. Getting rid of 1. 1970's Yamaha FG and 2. Giving away (was I mad!?) a Hofner Senator I had restored. Both were pre-owned.

Always bought used in the past. But my most recent guitar is the first one that I have ever brought brand new. This is because the used prices are running so high that it cost me the same.

If used is an option I always go used.
However as I’ve got a bit older I’m trying to slow the merry go round of constant GAS down so I’m much more picky now about the exact specs I’m after so that now dictates new.
Madness I know to most folk on here but my aim is to get down to having just the one guitar.

Currently I only have one that I bought new. But 90% of guitars I’ve bought over the past 20 years have been used.
