I've started liking old music

What's Hot
SporkySporky Frets: 29208
At the weekend I mostly listened to City Of Ships. Albums 11 and 7 years old.

Today mostly CSTVT from 2009 and 2011, and Geotic's "Mend" from 2010. I'm considering a go of Arbiter next, and that came out four years ago!

It's finally happened to me too. I'm an old fart who likes ancient music. I've let myself, and all of you, down.

When you said 'old' I thought you meant old. I kind of think of anything in the past 15 years or so as fairly modern. For me old is 70s and 60s. Anything before that I'm not interested in to be honest. I'm on a bit of a 70s kick at the moment.

As a special treat I am going to introduce you all to my recent listening. First, City Of Ships, described by one reviewer as "borderline unlistenable".

    CSTVT!

And - mellowest by some margin - Geotic.

To me, "old" music is Louis Armstrong's Hot Five. It still kicks ass.

Come back when you're listening to stuff that came out forty years ago, Sonny.

I was only seven then. They hadn't had long to get good at music by that point.

Eh?  Is this a wind-up Sporky?

The oldest thing you've mentioned there is 2009.  That's new music.  I've got underpants older than that.

The City of Ships tunes was loverly until the singing started.

It's still not old though. Old means they had to use a double bass because there wasn't another choice.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

There's been over a decade of new stuff since then. Bands that were neither born nor thought of then are making new awesome music.

I honestly can't fathom people who don't listen to music since 19xx. Every day new music appears. Why chew the same old gum over and over?

I do listen to music that's nearly as old as me (although hardly anything before, say, 1969).

I also listen to quite a lot of music that's been released in the last 10 or 15 years.  I find stuff I like on Spotify, by bands new to me, and still building a following, but they might have been recording for a decade.  An EP or two, then a first album, another one a couple of years later... it can take 6 or 7 years for a band to hit their stride.

To me that's new, but you're calling it old!  If something has to have been released in 2022 to count as "new", then OK, I've failed.

Gosh no - but last 5 years at most is "new".

Dubstep is the new classic rock.

Another couple of good bits of reviews - "my entire taste for music has been soured by listening to this album", "While I can stand many types of vocal work, harsh or otherwise, there is something about their quality on this album that is absolutely repulsive."

    To me, new is Rachmaninov.
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

    Yes, but which album?
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

OK, I've listened to and watched those City of Ships, CSTVT and Geotic clips... they're not a million miles from the kind of "new" stuff I'd listen to, particularly City of Ships, but they're a bit more alternative rock and I lean more towards spacy/sludgy/stoner metal.  I think the guy's vocals are alright.

Yep, new music to me is stuff after Djangos Hot Club and Robert Johnson. Y'know - Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Link Wray, Dick Dale, Little Richard, Fats Domino - that new music the kids are hep to.

Ten years too late and still getting it wrong
