    Neil Fallon (Clutch)
He was incredible when I saw Clutch live, really commanded the audience incredibly well.

Seen Clutch a couple of times now and gotta agree he is incredible, commanding is the right word, it’s hard to take your eyes off him,yet he looks like any normal bloke of the street.
Also have to agree that there just is too many to choose but have to say Ozzy is too easily dismissed, especially his Sabbath days .

  • He wouldn't be my choice for the best, but I have to second what others have said about Ozzy in his prime.
I watched a bit of a very old Sabbath thing on (I think) iPlayer recently - Live in Paris, perhaps?
Apart from manic levels of energy coming off him - just crazy energy - his singing was absolutely on fire.
Easy, easy to forget how good he was when he has become such a doddery old man. Even in the late 80's, he was but a shadow of his former self, but he genuinely was a great singer before he wrecked himself.

As for my favourite Rock vocalists...hmm..

    Freddie (obvs)
    Bono (is his prime)
Marcus King (stretching the definition of 'Rock', perhaps)
    Bruce Dickinson

More recently, and to also add a female voice to the list, Taylor Momsen has one of the best rock voices I've heard in a long time.

  • Steve Marriott, Paul Rodgers, and Terry Reid for me. Marriott is definitely my number one.

Not sure what we're defining as "rock" here but I'm going to say Jeff Buckley. As has been mentioned about others, live he was a bit of a show-off (although I know people who love that) but on Grace, he's absolutely superb.

Surprised no-one's mentioned Roger Daltrey yet, surely one of the first rock singers.

There's plenty to laugh at Rod Stewart about, but listen to him on something like "Reason to Believe" or "Stay With Me" and you're hearing someone in complete command of his voice. Is it rock? Not sure, but it's brilliant.

Also, I do like Myles Kennedy on some of the Alter Bridge stuff.

Has to be Mike Patton for me. Phenomenal range and control, can switch style in a heartbeat, throws in the odd bit video game voice work from time to time and also sings opera. In Italian.

You wouldn't classify them as rock all the time, but the sadly departed Mimi Parker of Low had a wonderful voice too. Listening to her sing Laser Beam live at The Barbican is one of my favourite music experiences.

  • My favourites would have to be...

    Chris Cornell
    Jim Morrison
Robert Plant when in Led Zep (I have to pick him as a local hero).

My favourite vocalist of any type (non classical) would be Jeff Buckley but I'm not sure he fits with the brief here as such. But if he does, then him

Also, if Blondie count as rock, then... Debbie Harry.

Ages ago I saw a support band at the Marquee. I think they were called Liason and I think that the vocalist was called Howard. I remember thinking that he was possibly the best vocalist I had ever seen.
