btw the carpenters we've had in all used quarter beeding... on the one I did I removed the skirting board and put new skirting board in and frankly life's too short.
They don't do skirting 12" thick

If it's mdf you shouldn't breathe it eh. I would rip it out and start again. I don't like that stuff, it makes noises when you tread on it and wears through with muddy boots quite quickly.
Still making better progress than me decorating. Think it's been two or more months now, the radiators are still disconnected and the boiler still switched off and the flat is only half done and still there is dust lying everywhere and I wake up and my lungs are aching.
Although I did a good job and it looks good, I kind of gave up and got a bit depressed about finishing it. Well not depressed really, just completely too bone idle to finish it. Still nothing like freezing cold showers every other morning to get me out of my depressive cycle.
Although I am determined to have it done by Christmas 2016.
Oh btw, don't worry too much about gaps at the edges, you can get some bevelled architrave to finish it against the skirting. Oh see that has been suggested already.
I replaced the skirting boards, I hate that layered paint build up look. I made them sadolin teak and wire wooled them and then waxed, they are micro metre perfect. So for a good job, rip out the skirting, you'll be amazed how it sets off the room.
So when you do it again, rip out the skirting first.
