As a 12/13 year old kid, whose musical 'awakening' was pretty much rooted in the British Ska revival of the late 70s/early 80s this was nothing like I'd ever heard.

The first song I can remember hearing and absolutely having to know what it was and how I could listen to it again was played over the PA at a BMX comp I was at in about 1984. I’d never heard anything like it before.

Turned out to be Phantom of the Opera by Iron Maiden and specifically the live version on the b-side of a Run to the Hills 7”.

That is the first 7” record I went out and bought myself.

I've had my mind blown many times in the different phases of my music listening life, from Abba, through Stiff Little Fingers, REM, Echo & The Bunnymen, to Efterklang, Godspeed You Black Emperor, etc. I could't pinpoint the absolute first.

However the one that I remember clearly is Husker Du - New Day Rising. That moment when you make a paradigm shift in your music listening forever more.

I don’t really know the answer to the question but Hocus Pocus would be a contender. My eldest brother gave me a couple of records and the long version was on a compilation album. Yes, mind blown.
I saw them in about ‘71, and couldn’t believe how quickly Jan played.

The mind expanding thing for me was Andante in C, the theme tune for Tales From the Riverbank. That’s when I realised that the guitar could play melody and accompaniment at the same time. From then on I wanted to play one.
