The second coolest person to ever rock a Gibson SG after Angus Young in my book.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe performing at Whalley Range's Wilbraham Road station in Manchester, appropriately singing about the rain.

I always thought attaching your strap to the headstock might be a good solution for neck dive- seems to work for her!

Bit more about this concert, Muddy Waters also played and Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards and Brian Jones were all there to watch.

Coincidentally Cerys Matthews played that earlier and mentioned, I think, the same concert.

She had a very early Les Paul that you see in photos pre the SG. And various acoustics with/without pickups prior to that. Really quite an early adopter of the solid bodied electric guitar yet often overlooked even though she was name checked by artists such as Clapton and the Stones when she was still alive. I guess her music was quite niche in UK  and she was old school blues in the sense that singers were aspirational figures in nice clothes (think of T Bone Walker or Bessie Smith) rather than the dungarees and battered guitar look that the white audience seemed to have wanted then.
But the few bits of footage of her have that wonderful energy, that undeniable wow factor.

  • What pedal was she using for her solo boost? And was it the Japanese one with the silver label or the identically-made but obviously different-sounding Taiwanese one with the black label?
What was her plectrum of choice?
    What valves did she favour?
    Is her rig true bypass?

To be 'frank', I'll propose Frank Marino :)

    Yep - I'd agree.
It just looks right on her.
There's a thread elsewhere on here about Do certain guitars suit different players.. and she's right on the money with this.
    ...she's got Dickie Davies eyes...

The third coolest Solid Guitar weilder, I'll leave yous to fight over positions 1 + 2 (Though it's clearly Angus & Rosetta - Frank and Robbie rounding out the top 5).
Ten years too late and still getting it wrong

Angus is No.1, obvs.  But we should throw this gentleman into the mix:

    I dunno about ’cool’.

Supremely talented, top guy and inspirational musician, for sure. Just not sure I’d call him cool.

In fairness, all the players mentioned are pretty cool alright. What I love about Sister Rosetta is the juxtaposition of the 'lady going to church' look with the classic rock axe. A bit like Albert King in a pinstripe suit and a Flying V.

I think technically this was a Les Paul Special? Someone else will know this better than me but Gibson made some SRT models and they were 1960 Les Paul Specials.
I also have a vague memory that Frank Marino (as he's been mentioned on here) also only used the Les Paul branded ones early in his career.
