Fake pies

What's Hot
What is the Fretboard's opinion of "pies" that just have a top crust and no sides or base?

Some may argue that they are superior as they allow for a higher filling to pastry ratio, but I disagree. It's not a real pie unless the filling is enclosed by the pastry.

Offset "(Emp) - a little heavy on the hyperbole."

    That's not a pie. That's a stew with a lid on.

    Spot on.

A stew with a lid on can be a good thing.

    It cannot be a pie.

Progress. You get rid of the nasty, soggy pastry.

Just get rid of the gloop that surrounds the meat and then you’re on the way to finding something edible.

fray bentos sort of get away with it. They are marvellous things really.
But a pie needs a pastry bottom and sides all the way round. (unless it is a slice of a bigger pie).
I think a steak and kidney pudding is a pie  (sloppier) and arguably the best version of a pie in the history of mankind.
    Dont worry, be silly.

The lack of sides is bad. Cooking the top separate from the filling is unforgivable.

Some pies have got more pastry than filling.
    That's not a good thing.

THANK YOU! I have been saying this for years.

Does that mean a shepherd's/cottage pie isn't a pie either?  Should we aim for all round mash coverage to make it a pie.

Where are we on things like pecan or pumpkin pie that rarely have a lid?  Perverted tarts perhaps.

I don't mind, but it isn't really a proper pie.  My brother, who is much more of a foodie, gets quite worked up about it.

He also strongly objects to "crumble" which is just stewed fruit with crumble mixture added on top after cooking.  Again I'm not that bothered, but he's right that the "claggy" bit, where fruit meets crumble during cooking, is the best part of a proper crumble.

Hmm, I wonder if we're getting into territory where those things, whilst perfectly fine, are not really pies at all?  I admit I have not looked up the dictionary definition.

Americans sometimes call pizzas "pies", and they're really not.
