  • I can't eat wheat these days so this is fairly moot, but I don't like soggy pasty at the bottom of a pie, so i'm 100% fine with "stew+lid", provided the lid is integral and not just plopped on afterwards

    That's not a pie. That's a stew with a lid on.
    Spot on.

A stew with a lid on can be a good thing.

    It cannot be a pie.
Did someone say “stew”? I feel queasy
I make a mean chicken stew. Do you need a recipe? :)

The answer, of course, is to have not-soggy pastry at the bottom.

Mervyn Peake wrote an book called "Mr Pye".
The book is excellent but definitely fake, unless you consider the cover as pastry.

Happy to eat either and I don't care what they call it.

fray bentos sort of get away with it. They are marvellous things really.
But a pie needs a pastry bottom and sides all the way round. (unless it is a slice of a bigger pie).
I think a steak and kidney pudding is a pie  (sloppier) and arguably the best version of a pie in the history of mankind.

There is a special circle of Hell so abhorrent, that Dante himself wouldn't even dare mention it, dedicated to those who keep Fray Bentos available and on the shelves, from the consumer dumb enough to not know the difference between their arsehole and mouth having one for dinner,to those who deliver them to stores, make them at the toxic waste dumps, CEO, and share holders.

Another thing thing that doesn't count as a pie in my opinion is those vile legalised toxic and poisonous ''macaroni and cheese pies'' that you get at football matches that don't have tops/lids on them.

Americans sometimes call pizzas "pies", and they're really not.
The Chicago Deep Pan (dough fest) - I get them being described a Pizza Pie - but nothing else.

Pot pies in pubs & restaurants are very hit & miss affairs IMHO, always wary of them, but I do like a good Steak & Ale with mash & veg. Also a fondness for Pukka Chicken & Mushroom from the chippy.

Imagine something sharp and witty here ......
