Obviously not acceptable on a master built instrument but I had big gaps around the neck on my American original and when I had it refinished the neck fit really snug. I can only assume there was some paint at the bottom of the pocket where the butt of the neck meets the body

Any pics of the whole guitar?

The yard is nothing but a fence, the sun just hurts my eyes...

Pretty dismal all round...those fret ends are shocking, would expect better on a Fender MIM. His assistant builders need sacking. Have you emailed him?
Thank you, I don't have his personal email address anymore, everything goes through dealers. When I've ordered from him in the past, I always had an hour on the phone to confirm spec, but now fender have stopped doing that. Will try and find some more pictures, thanks

I realise I’m late to the party but, yes, definitely return it! There is absolutely no excuse for this on any modern guitar, let alone at this price point.

Should see the neck pocket gaps on my SG - you can wedge plectrums in them!

That’s very worrying for a set neck!

It is but it's not fallen off yet! Didn't budge when the guitar fell over (the headstock broke, which i understand is a design feature of SGs)

    Hold the phone.

You have a set neck guitar with a neck pocket gap?!?
Do you mean under the pickguard near the cavities where the tang has gaps each side? I've seen that before but if not, please post some pics!!
The only easy day, was yesterday...

Exactly that! Decent size gaps either side of the tenon, and it's a short tenon, must be held together with hopes n dreams
