christ. I’ve felt like an A for so long (I’m not), why not try a B.
A: Allan Holdsworth
B: Foo fighters
The question is impossible because being a virtuoso and a great songwriter seem to be mutually exclusive.

Thing is - Paul McCartney is a great songwriter, well, IMNSHO the greatest melodic songwriter of the popular era, is because he was in the Beatles and his songs connected with millions, maybe billions of people, as naturally as eating chocolate somehow connected itself to the crucifixion.
Popularity and greatness are related... to take the "Yesterday" argument.. if those songs were written by anyone, at any time, they would become as popular as it's possible to be.
The question also pre-supposes that great music tends to be made by virtuosos, and that they tend to be unpopular. Now, you could argue the second part is undeniably true, but the first bit? I guess it depends on your definition of a virtuoso, for example, Mark Knopfler, Dave Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen all wrote fantastic songs, but all were also hugely popular.
So, I'll cheat...
Can I have loads of free stuff from guitar companies to shill for them as well?
I'm sure you aren't ugly enough to need a bucket on your head mate
I'm not remotely interested in being famous and I'm not that bothered about being rich either.
My "Captain meets Ed" would be fun...
" You just bought this reissue murphy labs 355 from the shop and filled it with packets of columbian marching powder, then came in here, made Pete connect all the amps up, and played a G chord loud enough it out and out killed the guy who edits the videos... why did you do that?"
"Honestly Lee... I'm not entirely sure..."
