Wow. I just don't get why so many

I use very few, I use natural distortion of the amp with attenuators, roll off volume for cleaner and then boost or dirt pedal and boost for dirtier.

Klon Clone (v rarely in use)
Hot Cake (rarely used and typically only with with the vintage AC-30
BB Preamp (used quite lot as "extra dirt")
Caline Blue Sky (used a lot for soloing)
Paisley Drive (as a low gain bit of extra dirt and currently on long term loan to a mate who seems to have permanently adopted it)

Unit67 is used for always on bit of compresser, bit of boost, eg and touch of rangemaster, but not used for dirt
I also have two American Sound pedals but they get used rarely when I can;t take my own amps

Because they sound and feel different, particularly in combination with each other.

If you don't use multi channel amps, or amp distortion at all then it's good to have a few different flavours you can call upon. It's well worth noting all the rational players I know who have a bunch of dirts usually only have 2 or max 3 on a board at any given time

Four overdrives (and one of those is listed in the classifieds atm) and one fuzz. My relationship with drive pedals is that I usually think they sound better once they're turned off. Exceptions to this are the low gain side of Boss SD-2 which I use for an enhanced clean sound and the Wampler Lightspeed which does sound like real valve amp drive but requires that I crank the gain on my compressor to make it trigger.

Always on the board: Barber GC, Analogman TS

Often on the board: Keeley Red Dirt, OCD, Duke of Tone, Carl Martin AC-Tone, Hotcake

Sometimes on the board: Boss BC2, Green Russian Big Muff, TS-808, Caline Pure Sky, Behringer Superfuzz

    That’s 12- a couple could go, but I might try a klon-style again soon.

Not that many, I've never been much of a pedals guy.  I've never owned a pedalboard.

I currently have an HXFX which is all I've used recently.

    Before that a FlyRig 5.

I have a Line 6 M9 which has dirt options but I never used it for that.

I have 3 individual dirt pedals

Boss DS 1: this is ancient, bought in the 80s.  I never liked it, rarely used it and it hasn't had a functioning battery in it for decades.

BB Preamp and Lovepedal Amp 11.  I bought these around the same time a few years ago with the plan of gigging with them plus the M9, or just a delay pedal.  I think I used that set up twice before I decided that the FlyRig was a simpler solution for the gigs I was doing and sounded just as good.
