I kinda knew it anyway, but having my almost entirely Boss board and my Decibel 11 switch dr.... the difference in noise floor between no effects in the chain and all of the pedals in the chain is ridiculous!!! Extremely noisy!!

    hahaha.

Well I used to have a SPACE, and it was just as noisy as these Boss pedals. You don't really expect that at those prices. But then, Boss pedals aren't that cheap!

I've heard a few people say that about Eventide.

Do you know if the H9 has the same issues?

I've always found boss to be pretty quiet, are you using good quality cables? Try cleaning your jacks and inputs with some contact cleaner.

I've noticed the dd3 is pretty much silent, but when I tried a dd6 it had a bit of noise in front of the amp on high gain, not much though, and both were deadly silent in the effects loop (from memory).

I don't recall any on the sd-1, but it had a bit of bypass leak. I now have a buffered tuner which would fix that, though, so I don't really know.

And I've got a boss df-2 en route, so I'll report back ;)

All the Boss dirts (at least the one's I've tried/own) have some leakage, so when off, they're still partially on.

I've not noticed much with the chorus pedals, but haven't used one for a few years.....

    Delays (DD-6) pretty quiet.

If they are Taiwanese made then contact Boss with the serial numbers and find out which worker made them.  I have read in several places on the internet that the Taiwanese Boss pedals made by Chen Lim are far better tone-wise with less noisy than the ones made by Huang Zhoax.

Seriously.... plug straight into your amp and compare it with a few Boss pedals in your chain. You'll be very surprised.

  • Would having a good quality PSU make a difference at all?

If the df-2 is like that, I don't think I could live with it.

Yes, but if it's a noisy pedal, it's a noisy pedal.

The worst I've heard is the geq-7. It's like filling your preamp with a bunch of angry rattlesnakes.

  • Why get worried about noise when you aren't playing?
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

A noisegate after did sort the noise out (MXR Smartgate)
