Solid State Amp heads?

What's Hot
Any recommendations? Say, something that would be the equivalent volume wise to a 30w tube amp? (assuming it would be around a 60w solid state?)

Anything basic with just clean and overdrive?

Would be nice to have a backup, but would like to try something different too, and match it with a cab.

No idea really where to start here.

A Marshall MOSFET 100 head - awesome thing of beauty.

  • The Orange Crush Pro look really interesting, but it's either a 60w combo, or then a 120w head (or 120w combo).

  • Is it possible to get ones without all the digital effects these days?

The Orange Crush Pro...apart from the reverb. It's pretty much a straight forward amp

  • The orange crush head maybe.

The website says it's perfect for "small to medium gigs" :)

Surely 120watts of solid state is loud enough for a pub gig!

What you said. Might be worth a shot, though the dual terror would be not much more :/ . Just looking for something non tube to have, might be good as a back up.

  • I've been looking at them for exactly the same reason as you.

I don't want all the FX and amp models....just a decent sounding reliable head.

  • IN terms of volume, a 120 watt solid state would be loud enough...?

Yup, looks like what I'm looking for. Could stick a reverb pedal in the chain, and I'd be set.

    But open to other recommendations..

The Tech21 Trademark 300 would probably do the job, but it's pretty hens teeth now.

Matrix VB800 (does have a preamp valve like the old Marshall Valvestate/AVT - ought not blow a preamp valve)

I havent gigged mine yet...but it can get very loud. I'm sure it would be enough to gig with, especially through a loud 4x12.

i can only compare to my marshall (100w super bass) as i dont have any other amps at home, and i will say, it's not as loud...but thats not to say that it cant hold its own against other 100w tube amps.

Hard to create a rule of thumb really as it all depends ....

    Don't know what others say - 2x S/S = 1x Valve ?

    Oh and here's a VB800 demo -->
