I rarely, if ever, think about guitar tone when I'm listening to music, but Hackett's on Firth of Fifth by Genesis is great.

I forgot about Robert Quine. I loved his tone, he knew how to get the best from a Les Paul jnr or special, can't remember which.

May be about to 'out' myself as a dirty punk, but even though I'm not a fan of every single song that Social Distortion have ever recorded, Mike Ness's guitar sound is always spot-on. P90'd Goldtop -> SD1 -> Bassman; no fucking about, pure perfection.

@ICMB - I was at what was billed as the last performance by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. It was at the Hammersmith (whatever it's called now but for me will always be the Odeon). It was a one off I think - in early 00's.
Clarke was playing through what I think was a HRD - his tone on Rattlesnakes just sent shivers up my spine and got me back into guitar playing again.

I don't know if this up yet but Robben Ford's tone on the "Talk to your daughter" album. Thick, sweet and smooth.

Eric Johnson - Clean and dirty tones

    Larry Carlton on "Kid Charlemagne"

For the LA AOR tones, Dann Huff, Steve Lukather, Tim Pierce and Michael Thompson

I don't normally like maple acoustics but this sounds beautiful.

I don't think Antoine Dufour playing it hurts either.

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

Larry Carlton has said that solo was played 335 into an old 50's Fender Tweed.

Wiz there mate. Hackett is massively underrated and his contributions to Classic era Genesis was stunning.
