Yes it doesn't seem like a good idea really. I should be able to cover most of the rent until September with student loan/grants, but I need to eat, keep warm and have fun.

Last time I was looking for jobs nobody was interested because I'd not been employed for so long. Maybe a year of uni under my belt will change that?

Well it's something I don't have to worry about just yet. Thanks for the feedback.

I've said it before-get a job in a bar/pub. They're pretty easy to come by and you can have a laugh doing it. You will get laid at some point if you work in a bar too.

holn, aren't you studying engineering? What year are you in?
You should 100% look for relevant work experience, no matter how noddy it is.

    Isn't @lloyd a takeaway delivery driver?

Holn, you could end up meeting some lonely old sugar mummy who orders takeaways each night just to see your lovely face strolling up the garden path.  It's worth a shot.

I'm sure I've watched a few online movies where just such a scenario takes place,

This is very good advice, is it a sandwich course you're doing? If not 100% get some experience while learning where you can. Every fuckers got a degree these days and every one of them is looking for work as I found out when I graduated: Worked in a factory, Argos and a bar for 12-18 months after graduating a couple years ago....

  • When I was at uni I used to get the most unpleasant job I could find in the summer as they tended to pay a bit more.

Find you nearest frozen food distribution centre and crack on with some 12hr night shifts picking .

At least you don't need to deal with the public and you get decent breaks.

  • If you're worried about nobody employing you because you've been out of work for so long, go volunteer your time somewhere in anticipation of applying for jobs.

When they look at your CV It won't look like you've sat on your arse doing nowt for years, but like you've been looking for work and still keeping busy/engaged. Just a thought!

Pimp youself out, advertise yourself in your local paper as either a bear or a twink, and your hourly rate, you will make more than you would as a delivery driver.  Maybe even have a lot more fun too.

I worked with a very boring bloke (not amazing in any way, just a plain looking guy with a dull almost Mr Logic personality) who had a stunning Mrs
Eventually learned he worked in a bar after Uni, and they would invite prettier ladies to lock-ins, indicating that their men-friends weren't welcome

Bar men get laid all the time....Lot's of young people working together, not taking it seriously getting drunk during work and after....recipe for disaster/fun....Not to mention that women are approaching you constantly....you end up getting loads of phone numbers or facebook requests nowadays....

It's great fun for a young bloke/girl, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Bar work would be good, except for being socially retarded. And I have problems hearing in noisy places. Gardening, I don't want to turn into Sambostar...

I'm only in my foundation year, so I'm not sure how easily I could get something relevant. And I couldn't even get factory work last time I tried. But I can try again, Nissan would be fairly relevant.

But yeah, this is a worry for June. I have exams to take, and a flat to get in order so I don't get evicted.

Fuck being socially retarded, it might un-retard you? Get a job as a "bar back" in a cocktail place-hard going but you'd have a good laugh-also no need for speaking to customers-unless you want to that is....

I agree on the gardening front.....

Join a few agencies and say you'll do anything-been there, shit work but it's cash in your pocket which is the most important thing? There's temp office work to be had in and around Manchester which is probably less money than factory work due to the amount of hours but that could be an option too, not sure what it's like up your way though....

I'm sure I've seen a couple of pornos where the hapless pizza boy gets ravished and abused by a couple of college teen babes. There's scope for a sideline within a sideline if you've got the stamina!

From my experience of English bars that sounds ideal.
As for the social thing, I think it's quite good for that.
A long time since I did it, my cousin did a few years ago and I get the impression the chain places tend to have gone zero-hours contracts now, which is hard to fit in round anything else as they expect you to turn up at the drop of a hat, but certainly worth looking into anyway.

Well the social stuff is autism related, I can get used to being friendly and pretending to be sociable, but it drains me.

Fair enough, just a suggestion, it might help, it could also hinder you I guess?

If you're up for something like that then there might be a barman's forum thing on Facebook for Newcastle-There's a Manchester one and I've picked up odd shifts and worked house parties and stuff through it but there's always people looking for bar men (with no experience) and Bar Backs....

Joining some agencies is probably your best bet for picking up all kinds of work. Do a CV and email them-but follow the emails up with calls/emails, I always thought they had their favourites to put into jobs but had good success by pestering them until they got me work so I'd leave them alone, once you're in your're in with an agency in my experience, perfect for students too as you can just phone before holidays and grab a shift or even get a night shift at a factory ad-hoc which will put £50/£60 in your pocket....

Another good job to get for students is as crowd control/marshalls-if theirs a big symphony hall or arena you can join via email and pop in for an interview (which is basically signing up to work) and then you can check their listings for working any events-very flexible, been meaning to join the one in Manchester as you can work when you want and get to watch the odd gig too....Easy work, my mates girlfriend did it through uni and got see loads of quality bands (some shit too) they even did a minibus thing for her from Nottingham and went to London, Birmingham etc to do all kind of events.

there is a chicken processing plant near here that has problems getting enough staff but if you can stick it then there are bonuses and promotions. There's also one of the parcel distribution places, shifts, strict rules, lot of people don't make it beyond 4 weeks but if you don't have to worry about life outside work for a couple of months and just want the cash. Or you could busk.
