How did I forget?! The full album version of Deep Purple's 'Speed King'… 45 seconds of utter mayhem, 45 seconds of peaceful near-classical organ, then finally it all kicks off for real with a bang.

I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

How the fuck has this not been mentioned yet? Builds amazingly.

Not far behind, this is their second-best intro.

    - "I'm going to write a very stiff letter. A VERY stiff letter. On cardboard."

As for others... great shout to whoever said Painkiller by Priest, Crack Hitler by FNM and Leave Them All Behind by Ride as well.

May I also suggest the fretboard-burning shred run Dann Huff does at the start of "Time To Burn" by Giant:

And this is super cool. Builds up really nicely... quite 70s?

    One from my childhood:

I hope no-one was planning on forgetting this:

And finally, the funkiest thing ever - I'd be tapping my foot to this even with two broken legs:

    - "I'm going to write a very stiff letter. A VERY stiff letter. On cardboard."

In terms of just guitar intro parts there would be loads of contenders but if we are talking about the whole band it's probably this. Nothing particularly special but it works...great opening vocal as well.

It's possibly suffering death by over-use now...but i still think that "London Calling" is the greatest into ever.

i used to be in a band who's drummer played it with an extra kick drum beat in there...and made it sound like the intro to steptoe and son

and he thought it was called "London's Calling"

    ...i sure miss that guy...

Am I allowed classical stuff? The intro to Beethoven's ninth is pretty excellent fare.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

I think you have to put the 5th Symphony up there as a candidate for the most recognisable intro to any piece of music ever written.

The intro to the Moonlight sonata is one of my favourites too. Maybe a little bit predictable, but they're famous for a reason.

The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

Speed King & Rush 2112 are prob my two faves...but pushing them close is the intro to Adam Faith I Survive
He asked Ritchie Blackmore to put a 1.75 min intro to the song which RB did....no context with the song whatsoever but a great intro and one that typifies RB's sense of humour I'm sure just to screw Top of the Pops
    Check it out...
