Which, in your opinion, is the worst looking headstock?

  • There was an even freakier Gibson headstock somebody posted on here some time ago - some sort of special designer job, but Gibson branded.  Looked like the cheesy string character.  I can't remember where it was though.image

dude, you made me do pics and a video!!  ;)

string tension will pull the two gears apart slightly if mounted the wrong way round

here are a couple of pics of me adding tension to a tuner post in two different directions

this is the same as normal mounting, the tip of the post is being pulled towards the body of the guitar by string tension, the gears are pulled together and will function absolutely fine.

This is the equivalent or reverse mounting, i am applying pressure to the opposite side of the post.  there is now a gap between the two gears.  not an issue in the short term, but its less than ideal and can lead to irregular wear and tuner slippage down the line

but that is not real is it.  Its a cheap ass tuner, its not been mounted so the bushing isn't there to provide any support and my finger pressure  is not comparable to string pressure

so, here is a vid of me applying pressure to the top of a brand new high quality hipshot tuner which is mounted properly to a new guitar.  I am using a string to apply pressure towards the tip of the headstock, as if the tuner was mounted backwards.  i even wrapped the string around the post to make sure the tension was applied at the correct point

the amount of tuner wobble varies massively with different brands.   Planet waves autor trim and sperzels usually seem particularly solid and i would have no issue mounting them backwards.  but anything with a bit of wiggle, always mount the correct way!!
I see the point you're trying to make, but in practice the force between the worm and the pinion is easily enough to pop the gears apart even if the tuner is mounted *the right way round*, if the teeth are worn. Therefore the forces in the gear teeth are greater than the 'wiggle' force and the direction of the mounting makes no difference… it's the sideways force between the worm and the pinion that matters, which is the same (although in opposite directions obviously).

The bottom line is that Zachary's headstock will work perfectly well. He may prone to delusional self-aggrandisement, but actually his guitars are reasonably well-designed. I like the headstock too :).

I'll give you that as a stupid design though ;). The need to use a guide for four of the strings is enough to condemn it outright.

There are some pretty fugly looking Vox headstocks........the Teardrop one being an example. They just look unbalanced and have no graceful shape.

I do confess to having a Seagull acoustic which is also quite unappealing.

I think the point is made, with pretty clear evidence.    Mounting tuners backwards  can pull the tuner gears apart slightly. I believe this is less optimal than mounting the tuner the correct way where the gears fit together nicely.

I am not saying tuners won't work backwards.  I am not saying other forces are not greater.  I am simply stating a fact about a change that can occur when tuners are mounted the wrong way round.  I see this as a compromise,  Its a change I am not willing to see as acceptable

so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

The original Gibson Explorer is hideous too, it's only just tolerable because it's become so associated with the body shape. Gibson didn't even scarf-joint them either, with predictable results.

I think the Explorer headstock complements the body shape beautifully, although in practical terms it's a poor design.

The Futura headstock was horrible though, that weird off-centre V shape.

Of the "normal" run of the mill guitars I have always disliked PRS.

They usually have nicely shaped curvy bodies and then stick that awful lopsided spiky thing on the top.

I mentioned the original nathan shephard one before, here is a pic now I am on  a laptop

functionally it makes a lot of sense and is quite a clever design,  I can see the point of it.  But only its mother would love it

@Wez I had a Caparison Matthias guitar and it was a bastard to set up!  With the 27 frets you had the make sure the neck was damn straight or you would get buzz towards the upper frets.

    Again, these are just awful:
