C'mon, it's the morning already, where's the pics???

    ;)

Plan it out, take it carefully, don't rush anything, and ask us if there are any doubts.  And that's just with getting the pics taken ...
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

  • Well, since you all asked...

So, it's an interesting project - my first bound body.

I tried masking around the f-hole then applying some wudtone white base coat, and it *sort of* worked, but not fantastic... I'm going to keep applying coats of which, though, to try and get that sorted.  The front face will probably be the last thing I do.

This is after just one coat of lady teal. There are a few patchy areas, which is pretty typical of the first coat of wudtone pigment, but on the side there are some marks which I believe were caused by glue seeping into the wood (I sanded it to 220 grit, and thoroughly).  However, these should be fixable if I keep applying coats because it's a solid colour kit, so I'm not too worried yet.

I've also decided that, for various reasons, it'll be my first minor aged guitar! This is because I've found some old hardware bits laying around that have aged naturally and they look great, so I'm going to see if I can get the other hardware to catch up. Should be easy - I started just by handling them all as they're nickel and it tends to age if you look at it funny...

Hoping it'll take 3-4 more coats of colour before doing the front, then top coating. This gives me time to level out the finish on the back and sides, ensure the grain is all filled then apply some silver highlights. All in all, I'm very excite - a couple of small set backs (I'm going to have to scrape some binding again as the masking came away in a couple of places :( ) but it's all a big learning experience.

Sure is. Can't wait till its a bit more even, though, tis a bit patchy so far...

But hey, I've done this plenty of times before and it always turns out great. I guess I'm nervous as I've never worked with binding before!

  • Yup, coat two on the back and sides and it's goddamn SEXY. really really excited. No more worries.

  • Sadly, I cannot order the final pieces (oil city pickups and custom cool etch plate) because my car has gone and borked.

    :(

However, the next pics on this thread should be my semi completed guitar, maybe in a week or two. :)

The f holes are okay, but it turns out they needed more sanding work so look a bit rough. Better than some unbound Gibson ones I've seen, mind, but not fantastic. Hoping I can iron that out without a refin, though.

Shot of the f-hole.  I've used white wudtone with just a tiny amount of teal added, should contrast nicely with the teal.  Should only need one more coat, actually, and it'll be good.

And here is the back/side shot, bit wet so looks a bit naff but I'm about to leave the house.

  • FUCK

This project has gone tits up.  Dad has just knocked it off the hanger - despite KNOWING it was hanging there (he saw it there literally 2 minutes ago and commented on it) SO...

This project either needs to be a relic project, but that'll still look shit on the back because it's full of dust and dirt...

Or I need to resand the back and start all over.  I'll need a new finishing kit, and then I'll have to remix the colour - and god knows how I'll get it to match the sides, so I'm probably going to need to resand the sides (FUCKING LOVE SANDING THOSE CUTAWAYS) as well, and just go from scratch.

    BALLS. I'm so angry.

That's really a bummer mate, and my sympathies  :(  - but I reckon you can get it back on track. Thinking about it, probably the best option is a case of some lovely sanding work, and another finishing kit (which imo your dad should be paying for!). Annoying to say the least, and it could easily add a week or more to the build time, but what's a couple of weeks when your building a guitar you could be using for years to come? I always think it pays to look at the big picture with a build project - you can sort this I'm sure. :)

    Yeah, I'm more calm now.

It's curing, and then when I'm back home Monday I'll see if I can wire wool or even micro mesh the dust and dirt out. Dings I'm not fussed - actually, a first light relic project could be very exciting.

I forgot to check the top to ensure its not cracked... Should be okay though. Guitars do get dinged from time to time, just as well it wasn't full weight with hardware!

If I can't remove the dust, dad will buy a new finish kit and I'll see if he'll contribute to a small hand held drum sander type thing, which should make sanding the cutaways less of a ball ache.

I'm hoping it's salvageable though, because the colour is rather nice. I like how wudtone, even when slathered on quite thickly (as is the case with mine) is still super thin and let's the wood show through, with different grain taking different amounts of finish.

If it's shit, I'll get the mouse sander out and just blast it off with 60 grit.

Man that sucks, you do understand he's just avenging all that shit you did as a kid yeah? What goes around comes around :)

Seriously though, sanding it off and going again shouldn't be too painful, should it?

    Cutaways dude, cutaways.

I've actually ordered some micro mesh, I'm hoping I can remove the nasties without ruining the finish beyond repair, then going on as normal. Here's hoping! The dings are not awful, all my guitars get beaten to hell anyway. The hardware is all nickel so will age soon, I may speed that up a touch but we'll see.
