    Nice one Mike.

For the moment, I'm plumping for Sabbath's "War Pigs", at about 30 seconds in, when the air-raid siren starts sounding. Makes me shiver, cos I can remember them still being tested on occasion as a little kid, and we always wondered if it was for real.

There's also two from the late Ronnie James Dio: One on 'Country Girl', and the other from Rainbow on Stage.

    Why thank you.

I've picked 2 of my favourite pieces, but there are many, many more quality songs around.

    This for example

The three minute mark on this as the solo kicks in - just my favourite guitar solo EVER.

Joe Bonamassa's 'Sloe Gin' when the police sirens come in at 4.50 and then the drums come in 20 seconds later. So atmospheric. and a lesson in 'sometimes less is more'. Which is what I keep telling our drummer.

    Yeah, I know I'm a siren junkie.

Not listened to it for years now (!) but Freebird when the solo kicks in used to make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Really did something!

The bit in Springsteens Born to Run where there's a mid song breakdown then a "123" and he comes back in with the line "the highways jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive"

    3:30ish in this clip

  • The blues guitar riff from elvis' Merry christmas baby at about 2 mins in.
Pretty sure its not james Burton on this particular solo as it was overdubbed after but whoever it is, its brilliant.

I agree that the greatest moment has to be live - have a listen for 20 seconds from 5:12 of this live recording of Allan Holdsworth, and hear the fat creamy sustain blossom into killing feedback at the end as the final note tails off.

    Actually I'll change my mind…

It's the moment when John Cage had the idea to write a piece of music composed entirely of silence. (Or more accurately, the ambient sounds in the performance area.)

The greatest conceptual step in the whole history of music, and it can only ever happen once.

  • @not_the_dj Yes! Brilliant choice.

I'm going to go for a recent one: The Walkmen - Everyone who pretended to like me has gone.

At 2.20 the guitar just crashes in over the top of everything then buggers off again.

I'd just like to see it covered more often.
