Halloween

What's Hot

20 + years ago when I were but a nipper no one seemed to do much for Halloween. I would be dimly aware that it was halloween, but I wouldn't do anything to celebrate it. We used to carve pumpkins for Guy Fawkes night when we would have a big party. That's kind of the way it has stayed for me. I am aware that it is halloween, but I won't be doing anything differently. Not because I disapprove or in any kind of grinchy way, but just because it's never occurred to me to do so.

I should also add even when I lived in London I've never had Trick or Treaters.

Now if the supermarket displays are to be believed Halloween is a pretty massive event so am I living in the 80's. Is it second only to Christmas in the revelry you will be engaging in, or had it not occurred to you it was even today?

I also don't do anything for it. I knew it was soon but, for some reason, though it was this weekend not today. I've never had a tricker or treater but I have had some just-in-case sweeties in previous years. I think I'll risk it this year.

    It's American BS.

We get the trick or treaters every year, usually they're around 15-16.

  • Know its today but I really object to the organised begging which is trick or treating so much to the point ain't going home tonight till 9 (ok arranged a job so didn't have to) so can miss the little buggers. Any excuse for a party is good though

It had occurred. We have never done much for it, we get small kid trick or treaters early evening and that's about it.
Big Tesco last week had aisles for Halloween, bonfire night, diwali and Christmas.

We get trick or treaters. I like the teeny tiny ones, the teenagers who want money not so much.

When I was a child it was all about turnips and the term "trick or treat" was known only in the panels of Peanuts.
"I can see you for what you are; an idiot barely in control of your own life. And smoking weed doesn't make you cool; it just makes you more of an idiot."

  • Halloween Roulette:

When the kids bang on the door you show them a tray full of sweets. They each take one and when they've started chewing, you say "One in 10 of those sweets is laced with rat poison but I can't tell you which ones they were".

"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

  • I'm guessing none of you miserable lot have young (or any) kids. It's not a holiday I particularly look forward to like Christmas but me and my 8 year old are out tonight trick or treating. We are going as Slenderman and Slender boy. Gonna be a right giggle.

  • I disapprove. Ever since some evil little brats scratched my car bonnet as a "trick" when I had no sweets.

    It's nothing more than extortion.

    More or less this.

As a grown up, I'm astounded by how easily my grandad used to hollow out a turnip. I've tried for my own son and went out and bought a pumpkin.

    I love Halloween.

I have a rule of 'no costume, no candy'.
I also mess around and have a basket of onions and potatoes at the door and give the kids those.
After much protestation and anguish on their behalf  I eventually DO give them some sweets.

    It is fun.

Pedant: It's actually Hallowe'en as it's a contraction of All Hallow Even.

And the police are issuing posters .. you'd think they have better things to do:

That poster should actually read "Please throw eggs at my house"

I grew up in a small village in Hampshire and every year we had a very traditional Halloween party type thing, dipping for apples and all that, put on at the school (room, literally) by the vicar, school teacher etc. Hadn't heard of trick or treat until ET I think.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

I think if I were designing one I'd have a picture of JImmy Saville with a pumpkin and the headline 'Treat or treaters welcome - kids only'

That should set the tone nicely ... :-)

I could set Frank on them,  watch them run screaming up the street,  that'd be fun.
