  • If you go to a tobacconist , the boxes can be bought (empty) for a couple of quid :-)

I have a tricky house move/search next month but if it all works out ok I'm keen to do an 8 string lap-slide...

I'm out, sadly, but only because I jumped the gun and finished setting up a slide-only guitar last year (realised I'm never going to learn slide properly unless I have something I can just grab and go).  I'm really very interested in how folks setup guitars for slide though, so am looking forward to following the builds (think there's room for improvement, or at least further experimentation with mine).

@dtr A simpler slide instrument may help develop guitar slide playing. :)

  • You can buy an attachment to go over nut to raise the action or I have set mine just slightly higher than normal. ... It really is more about technique than anything else .damping the strings you aren't playing etc.... I'm certainly no expert but I learnt my technique with my 3 string cigar box and can pretty much manage on any guitar (even a standard acoustic at open mic nights)
I started in open G with muddy waters' I can't be satisfied'. Good luck :-)
    cheers Mark.

  • I'm in.
I've been wanting to build a fretted cigar box guitar using an old dutch cigar box i found when clearing mums house when she died.
The biggest cost will be a proper neck from chickenbone john but should still be well within the £100 budget.
The plan is to tune this one to open D similar to the one Mccartney used on the "cut me some slack" track.
It'll be all stained ebony black with silver parts and poss rails pickup.

i had not seen that site

full cigar box kits from £70 or neck kits a bit cheaper

they look nice quality  -  the £70 ones look like they would be a good option for decorating and customising.  Seems like a good option for the challenge.

I'm terrible at these challenges, I never finish them. But looking at that site listed I could have a neck for £32 and the rest could be made up of bits and bobs I have around the house (I have some p90s and single could pickups, pots etc)

Hmm I'm tempted but not 100% yet.

Not quite what we had in mind, but if you can build one for £100, go for it  ;)

I might have a go.  I think the definite advantage is that you can draw the frets on rather than saw them.

Given my track record for completing projects (not very good), I should probably stay out of this, but I've been thinking of making a lap steel for ages, so I'm in.

Hasn't stopped me (although I did make and fit a pickup to mine). I suspect I'm more motivated when making something from scratch.

  • No I have very definite plans, just no time!

  • After some careful thought, I'm in, particularly after the other half asked why I wouldn't take part.

    Think I'm going super simple.
