I am utterly heartbroken. Truly, truly saddening.
I have not yet seen any changes in my community - but it is absolutely abhorrent to me that there are people who are so despicable in this country.

I honestly hope that this country pulls itself from these depths and re discovers the joys of a multicultural society that can adapt, thrive and grow in the prescence of difference.

On the positive side. At work today we had 15 different nationalities sitting round a table in a pub all having great laugh and forgetting work for a change. Over the weekend our company (massive GLobal IT company) had a float at London Pride. Since joining a year ago, The is the first time in a long ti,e I've felt proud of where I work. However 4 FB friends have been removed today and one relative due to racist slurs.

Mrs Fred is Bulgarian and she is very upset and scared now. She has built up a pretty large network of Bulgarian ex-pat friends and they're just as frightened. The xenophobia is one thing to deal with, she's had that from day 1 when she moved here to marry me.

What scares her (and I assume her friends) is that they've been through huge political upheaval before. They are all saying this feels exactly the same as when the communism came to an end. The same things are happening. Triumphalism, euphoria, chaos, political collapse, uncorked xenophobia.

In Bulgaria the hatred and polarisation between the Bulgarians and the huge Turkish population was unleashed, there were troops on the streets, curfews, lynchings, organised gang rapes, you get the picture. 25 years later and the country is still a clusterfuck. Political chaos and weakness, endemic corruption, huge organised crime and a very powerful Turkish political party, backed up by Turkey, who want nothing more than to re-instate the Ottoman Empire and 'take-back' part of their empire (Bulgaria, and for that matter, Syria).

Of course our situation now is very different, but you can understand the real dread many people are fearing right now. A 16 year old girl cowering in her own home with nothing to eat, scared to go out for fear of murder or rape.

When communism fell and we all cheered a LOT of bad stuff happened across Eastern Europe and those things you don't forget easily.

No wonder they're scared to fuck.

This, my gf saw the collapse of communism in the former Czechoslovakia as a little girl.

I hate to be a downer but this kind of shit has been happening for ages to certain extents but I hate to say it the reason why the press are really covering it now it's because it's white on white racism. 

Whenever there's been a terrorist attack or something in the immediate aftermath (and at other times as well), it's not just Muslim people who get a lot of shit from idiots but people who are considered to look like Muslim, which a lot of the case is just any one who has brown/dark skin!  Then there's racism towards Afro Carribean people which is another can of worms and good old fashioned Anti Semitism to name a few other categories which have been going on for a long time. 

Not that I am sticking up for it in the slightest bit, I think it's really fucked up and sad that the outcome of the Referendum is creating even more divisions and boundaries in a society that was really divided at the best.  It's more that I am not surprised or shocked by the xenophobic abuse, it's been around for ages just that a lot of people shrugged it off or didn't take as much as notice as it was happening to people outside their comfort zone.

I suspect there may be an age related element of over - sensitivity from this lady who is obviously very distressed however she may well have good cause .......... I find it simply incredible how disgusting these people can be and how pathetically ignorant.

 If there are people reacting to their misconceived licence to become racist morons that have gone 'tribal ' then we are moving into very dangerous and disturbing times.

 Fortunately I think that we already have such a melting pot of diversity/ mixed nationality/mixed race and religion that the imbecile Anglo Saxon Supremacist type mentality will never gain any traction .

 Did these types see a vote to leave an economic group as an endorsement of their social nationalism /national socialism and an excuse to legitimise their latent racism ...............sadly it seems so !..........Release the hounds !

I can handle the financial fuck up but it's things like this that really make me sad about the whole EU deal.

Farage is such a fucking wanker with his victory cries of "We've got our country back" - of course it was going to inspire the rest of the arseholes to start kicking off.  He's got such a lot to answer for.....

A classic example from closer to home... The other night a friend on FB shared a fairly illiterate post from a woman about an asian man in our local park taking photographs of children.  He was approached, someone took photos of him and the police were called, at which point the man walked away...

However, the comments were absolutely incredible.... "He must work in a curry house".... "We're out of the EU, so we can send him home".

That existed before Brexit.  Casual racism is something I am well too familar with from personal experiences.  In London there have been a number of 'racist bus ladies' well before Brexit, which were the ones which were filmed and reported.

The reason these things are being reported on now is because it's happening more (apparently) because of a decision made by 52% of the people that turned out to vote in the referendum.
