Bands you really tried to like - but failed.

What's Hot

I thought I should like Radiohead and Muse, but in truth I only made a half-assed attempt to like them - I bought one album each. Didn't like either and discarded both bands.

However, there are two bands that I REALLY tried to like, and I am finally admitting to myself that it failed.

The first was The Enid. They tick my favourite box (prog), I saw them live in 82 and enjoyed it, and they have one track I absolutely adore (In the region of the summer stars). I have about 5 albums on vinyl, but if truth be told, playing them is a bit like holding your nose and taking your medicine. I have never really got to grips with their pseudo-classical meanderings. After over 30 years in the pending file I think I'm gonna have to file them in the 'No' drawer.

The other band that I have failed with is post-Fish Marillion. I had a massive love affair with the original band, but I have just never liked the material since Fish left. Not proggy enough and a lack of guitar and keyboard solos are the things I cite. I have 5 or 6 albums, and in truth they are 'OK', But I can't tell you a single thing about any track anywhere (well, apart from the lovely 'Easter' on the first album). The music just doesn't grab me on any level.

Got any bands that you really put effort into (eg not just one album) but ultimately failed with?

  • When I was a headbanging youth Judas Priest ticked all the boxes but I never enjoyed them much. I have occasionally returned to their catalogue and despite liking the dumbest of dumb 70s and 80s metal I remain unmoved.I think by about the mid 80s I'd lost the ability to be passionate about bands in quite the same way so for the last thirty years all bands/ acts tend to fall into the 'they're okay' bracket so anything I reference on here will be ancient.

Yes, post Fish Marillion lost my interest quickly as did post Marillion Fish. A band a fair bit fair but outside my comfort zone but something about the combination worked. It'll be just the same when Mel and Sue leave Bake Off....

Sort of feel the same way. Love the tones and the production, but the riffs are a bit disjointed and difficult to really vibe with. The groove seems to take a back seat to cleverness a lot of the time.

    Coldplay (excepting Clocks)
    Radiohead
    Eric Johnson
    Pat Metheny (on his own)
Robert Cray (walked out of the dullest concert I've ever been to)

Opposite: (Got dragged to concerts and was mightily impressed)
    Stereophonics
    James

Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

  • Interesting that there's lots of Marillion mentions here.

"Holidays in Eden" was the current one when I got into them, so I've never had the "it's not the same without Fish" emotions.

I went back and got the Fish era stuff (Clutching at Straws is my favorite) but I tend to treat them as two separate bands....and there's plenty of glorious Rothery solos in the later stuff!

I hope Periphery will eventually write a more commercial sounding album, even if they just do it once.  They can totally do it, they're all absolutely killer musicians and there are lot of great moments in their stuff.

For some reason, I've never got on with them, even though I should.

Their albums can vary so much that it depends which albums you tried.

My favourite by far is Metropolis Part 2.  I don't like all of them though.

I got a box set with a collection of studio albums (quite a few) so I should really try to give them another go.

Original album series?  Yeah I got the same one.  In there my favourites are Metropolis and Images and Words.  In fact those Original album series sets are pretty awesome value, they've done them for several different bands
