I'd scrap speed limits, re-define what "dangerous driving" is to include excessive speed (if necessary), and enforce those laws more rigorously. To say you're "safe" at 29 or 30mph and unsafe at 31 is totally ludicrous, whereas it's possible to act the twat at any speed below or above 30mph.
Speed kills end of ... as an old school friend of mine who was a traffic cop said speed was a factor in over 80% of the road accidents he was called out to .. sobering thought.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

Trouble is, some people just don't like being told to change their habits.  A few deaths (daily) are considered acceptable I suppose. :(

They should be a lot more concerned with the million other completely shitty driving behaviours in all honesty. Of all the accidents or near misses I’ve ever seen whilst driving it’s a tiny minority that were down to speeding.

(ie Mobile phone use, driving at 80mph and leaving a gap so small to the car in front that you wouldn’t be able to avoid a collision at 20mph let alone 80mph in the case of an emergency stop....)

I'd say that one is the answer :)
Spot on.......my sons friend was a bit tipsy last weekend but not a nuisance.....he left a club and took a 14" dance stick (it's like one of those little wands with a ribbon on the end that Gymnastics girls use ) anyway, stopped by Police who found it "on his person "and want to fine him for carrying and concealing an offensive weapon !!!!!!
Shame he didn't have his Harry Potter invisibility cape too ! Anything to rinse a few quid on a fine.
Friend was taken to court (he is a carpet fitter ) because he was stopped outside a house where he was working whilst going to his van and searched -of course he had a Stanley knife with a hooked carpet fitting blade.in a work tool-belt holster......he explained he was a carpet fitter, showed rolls of gripper, underlay and carpet in the van and the house he was working on .
The tried to prosecute for carrying a " Long handled knife with a shanked blade " ( A Stanley Knife !!!!!) but they cleverly refused to describe as such. Talk about selling a Hamburger and calling it Steak !
Yes,he got it thrown out after getting a lawyer ...........lot of very worrying Police and CPS behaviour of late.
He is Black ...........it reminds me of the Mel Smith sketch from the 80s where they try to arrest a Black guy for any reason but he has a good excuse so in desperation they charge him with wearing a "Loud shirt in a built-up area "
You know that the Police don’t get the money from fines, right? It goes straight to the Government, or local authority if from speeding fines.

The Police have better things to do than stop people just to find them.....
This week's procrastination forum might be moved to sometime next week.

though if you think about, cars and people were involved in 100% of those accidents. Ban this filth says I.

They should introduce the death penalty for anyone who blinks whilst driving. Sneezing should also carry death but means your relatives are put in a slave labour camp.

    Will. Never. Happen.

Speed enforcement is done proportionately, and therefore considered mostly fair by all but the most self regarding assholes.

Bring in zero tolerance and you break the principle in Britain of policing by consent, I.e. the police rely on the general support of the law by the public.

It's one of the things that makes our police less aggressive and generally more liked than in many other countries.

That's true, although it's possible to change attitudes over time. Drink driving is now seen as more or less completely unacceptable, by all other than a tiny minority who simply refuse to accept that the law applies to them.

But I would put changing attitudes about mobile phone use ahead of changing attitudes about speeding - it's almost certainly more dangerous.

Wish it would happen.  Everyone, I mean everyone is up my arse straight away on the roads through the villages around here and everyday at least once a day I see someone narrowly avoid a horse or a cow on the road by skidding to a halt.  No one pays any attention to the speed limits  I not jealous but I'm thoroughly fucked off with modern motors which are essentially status symbol mobile armchairs.

Zero tolerance and hang them if they get caught taking the piss three times in a row.

There is no place for speed on commuter roads.  Even if you have the best brakes in the world you can't predict the future.  We're not in control of ourselves or anyone else it's an illusion, if you think you are and speed you are a twat.  Cat got run over the other day in a thirty zone, which people treat like a 50 zone, if that was the girlfriends grand daughter there would be nothing left of her.  Everyone goes on about drink driving, but it's far safer to be slightly over the limit the next day and be cautious than to think the world owes you a favour by speeding everywhere.

Round our way the council decided to impose a blanket 20 mph limit on all residential streets.  They spent a small fortune putting little "20" signs everywhere.

So now when you drive at 20 mph as required, there's always a tailgater flashing you to get out of the way...

Can they not read?  Do they think it doesn't apply to them?

TBH, I can't see how anybody who drives on UK roads at the moment can think that speeding is even an issue relative to all the dickheads driving round using their phones. I drive to work mostly on a dual carriageway with a 70 speed limit. There is very little excessive speeding, but there are tons of people doing 50 while wandering across lanes cuz they are looking at their phones. It's so obvious, you can spot them a mile off, and when you drive past them, they have their phones lit up on their steering wheel, without a clue whats going on around them.

I've seen a HGV driver run a red light at some roadworks as he was on his phone, the fucker could have killed me. I held my hand on the horn and he was just looking round blankly as he had no idea where he was and what was going on around him. .

It's an epidemic at the moment, and IMHO the police need to be tackling mobile phone use while driving, not enforcing zero tolerance speed limits.

As someone who does between 35-40k per year.
It's just another tax.  Speeding is not the issue its where people speed.
Every day I still see people with a phone to their ear or texting still no real will to enforce it.
Police Car the other day passed the same swerving idiot as I did on the M25 who was texting one handed and did nothing.

Camera's are all they are interested in as a revenue scheme.

I think the trainer at the recent speed awareness course I attended could not justify our high level of camera to an improvement in RTA  and road deaths in comparison to the EU countries with less cameras and more realistic management.

Frankly, if there is zero tolerance then all cars must be governed. As there is not a  reason to speed even if its to manoeuvre safely out of trouble.

As for motorways cars, these days are far safer than my MK1 escort at 70 when I was 19

    Hey ho

I do wonder about this sometimes. There's a feeling and perception that the revenue generated from speeding fines has now somewhat become a necessity to fund certain aspects of policing/society. It's perfectly within our own control as a nation to not speed, so say we all took extra due care and attention for a period of say twelve months, how crippling would that be for certain state organisations if that revenue stream suddenly massively dried up?

It’s low hanging fruit that requires no effort to convict and creates revenue. It’s funny how the cameras get switched off when the revenue doesn’t go to the operator.

There are dash cam compilations on YouTube with thousands of clips and the vast majority have nothing to do with people covering a little bit of ground in not enough time and mostly to do with utter fuckwittery and cunts not paying attention. Too many cunts drive 10mph under the speed limit thinking they are driving safely because they aren’t speeding, well that’s just one box they’ve left unticked really as they drive in a fucking daze or on the phone or completely unaware of their surroundings.

I'm an ex-motorcyclist. Speed limits didn't apply then and unless I think I'm being watched, they don't apply now. What does apply is common sense. If there are people trying to cross the road, or horses in the road, then much-less-than-the-speed-limit applies. If it's a clear road and nobody in sight then approx-the-speed-limit applies as the chances are someone will appear from somewhere and you need to be able to react. And if it's the main drag through the industrial estate with proper foot/cycle-paths either side and there's nobody anywhere near the side of the road then 30mph is the council having a laugh.

Well well said @jez6345789.  I'm in a similar position to you and if the government / police really gave a shit about road safety, they'd have cars out there trying to do something about the pandemic of drivers texting / browsing at the wheel, but remotely setting a camera to fire at +1mph is such a cash cow.. fuck the plebs if they want to smash into each other whilst on the phone though.
